The Royal Terrace Pier. Gravesend. Kent. UK.
Just one of many piers and jetties in the area. The Thames River Pilots operate from here.

The Grade II listed pier was built in 1844 by the Gravesend Freehold Investment Company. Designed by architect John Baldry Redman the building cost was £9,200. On 7 March 1865 Princess Alexandra disembarked here when she arrived to marry the Prince of Wales (later Edward VII).
The Gravesend Lifeboat Station moved to the pontoon at the end of the Royal Terrace Pier in June 2007.

The Harbour Arm and Lighthouse. Margate. Kent. UK.
From Victorian times onwards Margate was a popular holiday resort on the South bank of the widest part of the Thames estuary. Londoners used to flock down on the steam trains from London to enjoy the sea and sands - a distance of about 80 miles. The popular snack from the sea food stalls of the time would have been locally caught winkles or shrimps, or maybe jellied eels. Although the sea food stalls are still around, they are not so abundant. However, there are all the usual fish and chip shops, candyfloss kiosks and gambling dens stuffed with the usual 'one armed bandits' although these have been electonicated (new word) these days to rake the money in a bit quicker than in our grandparent's days. There were no Indian curry houses or Chinese restaurants in our grandparent's days, either.:-) It doesn't feature too high on my list of places to visit with friends.

Bit of a contrast there Ray
The Gravesend one has character but not sure about Margate
Thanks for heads up.
We've a Margate, beautiful spot, but only good an odd old fashioned timber jetty and modern concrete monoliths.

I do hope that pier has been strengthened to take the weight. It looks precarious to me!-?

The pier has been opened for public in 1961. It has been renovated in 2015. The giant wheel has been opened in 2016.
