Try KAP (kite aerial photography). First you get the kite flying about 100-200 feet high, then you hook up your camera rig to the line, then you attach the camera and secure the button down for it to shoot in continuous mode. (There are actually a few more steps involved), but by the time you are finished you will have tons of onlookers and (this is the strange part) TONS of advice. I mean TONS. Everytime I try it and someone comes along they give me advice, and they've never even done it before. It takes a lot of patience not to turn and say, "go away!"

I've had it happen to me at the zoo. Because my wife works at the San Diego Zoo, I spend a lot of time there and have learned something about the behavior of the animals.

Knowing that the gorillas would move down to the lower part of their exhibit in the afternoon, a friend and I set up our tripods and cameras at the lower viewing area, even though the troop was in the upper part of the exhibit. I don't know how many people stopped, looked into the exhibit and then left, shaking their heads, when they didn't see the animals.

Maybe it was the "animals" who were down there that made them move on? :p

This scenario happens a lot when I'm using my 300L. I've even set up the tripod, gimbal head and 7D with 300L and pointed it at a zoo enclosure which said "animals out of exhibit". People still came over, got their cameras out and looked for several minutes before asking "Where's the animal?"

Fabulous...

I'll have to try that when I get a chance to take the 500 to the Phoenix Zoo!

As an aside, there were some interesting birds in the trees inside the enclosure, so I wasn't just wasting my time.

I have had it happen a few times, its frustrating but I guess it goes with the territory.

I think its actually an extension of Murphys Law (if anything can go wrong it will), the photographers extension being "if anyone can stand in your shot, they will"

Could be! After all, the highest fence in the entire zoo is used to keep out the middle schoolers next door.

It sounds similar to the latest hilarious Lumix commercial (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YlI5t6Fgk50 (external link)) about what we were talking in another thread here.:)
