It's crooked, and not trying to be harsh, but it doesn't really do anything for me. It's a fading blue post and a rope. It's kinda boring.

Its not exactly 'crooked'...its most likely a piling (not a post) at a waterfront, where not everything is nice and plumb.

The image looks a little flat...try a simple curves adjustment layer to boost the contrast by bringing the darks down slightly and the brights up slightly (about the same amount). A simple S-curve will do it...then some slight sharpening. The difference will be like night and day, and shouldn't take you more than 30 seconds.

In it's present state it's not the most interesting item but a good b/w conversion with extra contrast may improve.

It looks like steel cable around the piling rather than rope.

I'd crank up the saturation. contrast and sharpen to show off the chipped blue paint and texture in the wood and cabling.

If you turn on "image editing OK"...or give permission, I can show you what your photo could look like.

Is there anything surrounding it that might enhance the post? By itself and so closeup doesn't do anything for me.

Here are a couple of adjustments, and a picture from the same location. I'm starting to like the black n white. I will try to disable navydoc. Thanks

I think the piling seen further away is more ordinary and not very interesting. The closeup can show lots of detail and texture that I think makes an interesting photo. Here's my edit of the OP's original image. Thanks for letting me post it. Better results could be had by using the original, larger file.

This is my take on it. I'd opt for less contrast and go for a faded look.

For the wider shot that shows the entire piling, I wouldn't push so hard as that would make the image look unrealistic. For the closeup, to me, it's now more abstract art and more a study in color and texture.

I don't mean to imply the OP's version is wrong and my edit is right. I just wanted to show him a different possibility. And, of course, art is in the eye of the beholder.

I don't think I was being "dissed". :D
