I will be taking several extended trips this year and would like to know if anyone has any suggestions on portable memory storage. I have about 56GB worth of compact flash cards and for most weekends this is enough capacity till I can download the cards on my computer. But I will be traveling out into the bush and would like to hear what works for other people. I see they have several types of readers that store the files in sizes from 80GB t 500Gb or more. I don't really need a screen since I would still want to do the editing on the computer and not on a little screen. I don't have a laptop so please don't suggest a laptop with a usb portable hard drive, I was looking at the storage like the Digital Foci. Was wondering which ones people had the best luck with. Thanks

Alaska? Beautiful place. Lived in Nome and Kotz for 2 years myself and get up your way a few times each year. Heading to POW in two weeks for steelhead, the Kenai in July and Sept. Anyway, for storage, I got an Epson P-3000. Awesome device. Read up on the current models, Epson P-5000 and P-7000 on B&H. Great device for back up/storage and also has awesome 4" screen for viewing images to ensure you got "the shot".

Thanks for the reply Dan and will check out the Epson models. Hope the weather is nice for you when you come up. Last year we had a nice summer, hope it is the same for this summer. Coming for reds or kings in July?

Will be at a remote USFS cabin on POW in early May. Late July will be camping near Cooper Landing and fishing for buts out of Deep Creek one day, floating the Upper Kenai for reds and bows two days, doing the Kenai Fjords Tours "Capt Choice" day cruise out of Seward one day, staying one day down in Homer just being tourist. In Sept, we will be camped at the RRCG for 12 days, floating the Upper Kenai for bows/dollies each day in our raft. Beautiful area and can't wait to get back. Our normal thing is remote float trips, usually in Arctic NW Alaska. But we fished with some friends from Alaska last year on the Kenai and had fun, so this year we will be meeting them up there again.

Can't help you. I use a netbook, but I'm not out bush for that long. Have a good time. Am.

Not tried any of the latest models, but the older Epsons were reknowned for their extremely slow speeds. After researching this last year my conclusion that the Hyperdrive Colorspace UDMA was the best around. By the bare device and stick in a 320GB 2.5" drive. It's the fastest at transferring from cards and that helps give it a great battery life.

Any of the devices of around $200 that can storage memory from a CF or SD card is what you need.

Another vote for the Hyperdrive Colorspace UDMA. You can install your own harddrive if you want to save a few bucks.

Then I upload the cards onto it by using a Sandisk Extreme FireWire Reader. http://www.amazon.com …BQZDW&colid=2RWFV5P1BIT5A (external link)
Their cheap, small, large capacity and fast to upload and download.

Take Care,
Cheers, Patrick

Thanks all for the replies, gives me something to check into. All I knew is that if I would have to spend $200 or more for storage in the 80GB range I might just as well buy more Compact Flash Cards.

Tis the way it is. Sorry. CF cards are cheaper. Remember a nice wallet, I have a Think Tank one and it's great.

True that. I generally have enough cards that I can shoot for a week without needing to overwrite any cards. Of course I back them up as well, but cards are getting quite inexpensive.

Yep - Pixel Pocket Rocket (external link) - holds 10 cards and it's easy to use plus you can anchor it to your bag, vest or belt.

I couldn't agree more on simply using CF cards instead and the TT Pixel Pocket Rocket would be just the thing to store them in
