if you already have the 24-70 ... i wouldn't buy the 17-50. i'd use your kit lens OR a 10-22

I'd look at something wider than the Tamron 17-50mm, because a 24-70mm will cover the normal focal lengths. Perhaps look at getting a Canon 10-22mm or a Tokina 12-24mm so then you'll be able to have a lot more versatility on the wide end.

Personally, I think the 17-50mm gives a more useful range than the 24-70 on a cropped body. I think those two lenses have too much overlap to make it worth while. A better/more diverse set up may be an ultrawide with a 24-70, or a 17-50 with a 70-200mm lens.

Good luck.

I agree with everyone else. I mean unless your going to be leaving your 24-70 at home and using your 17-50 instead sometime. but carrying them both around would be a pain.
But I could understand not wanting to lug the 24-70 around and using the 17-50 instead, and then there being times where you want the 24-70 instead of the 17-50. Hell I would do that!
Same thing as people having a 16-35 and 24-70.

BUT if your going to be carry them both I think the Tokina 11-16 2.8 would go well with it!

too much overlap in my opinion...i'd go 17-50mm, and something like a 70-200mm...or 10-20mm with a 24-70mm...

i would just get the 17-50 and see how it goes from there. the ranges are too close on those two lens.

I think you should try to shoot with the 24-70L for awhile and see the results :p
I wouldn't be surprised that you will find it a lot more versatile and produces higher quality images than the Tamron so all you really need is an ultra wide like one of those 10-20 something lenses

actually on a crop model the Tamron 17-50 2.8 (non-vc) is significantly sharper than the Canon 24-70 2.8 L on all comparable focal ranges and apertures

yeah... that's the same site that claims the kit 18-55 IS lens is just as sharp as 24-105L, 24-70L etc

You may want to take a look at this:

another thing is sharpness isn't everything you should also take a look at CA, distortions, contrast etc. From what I have heard FF lenses usually performs better on crops because they crop out the less sharp corners :D

Get a 50-150 or 70-200 to go with the Tamron.
