Hey All,

I did a couple of simple mods on my Deep Octa to get a honeycomb grid on there. I recently got the rotogrid for my 70cm rotolux and loved it so much I thought I try this out.

First thing I did was add 2 inch white velcro inside the box so that I can get the diffuser hood on without having to thread the rods through those pockets inside the hood that way I can quickly velcro the hood on, so first PIA solved. It's not as taught as it is with the rods inserted but it's good enough.

Secondly I had a local tailor shop sew on 2 inch black velcro on the inner rim of the hood just before the white diffuser cloth. I bought a cheap Chinese 90cm fabric grid and stuck that on the velcro. Since the hood is only attached to the box by velcro and the grid is only 90 cm, it pulls a little bit (as u can see below) but still works fine.

Unit assembled:

Test shot w/ hood, inner and internal diffusers - 160/s f/9

Test shot with grid, external and internal diffusers - 160/s f/8

IMAGE: http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4064/4541037484_0a6c937dba_o.jpg

Power level was the same on both shots, model was about 1.2m from the box, and 1.7 m from the wall.

These were shot with my D700 and 24-70G, SOOC RAW converted to jpg with Capture NX2. Don't have much time to do any real tests, but these quick tests show how it works. Will do some more tests when I get the time. Really busy with the world Expo opening in 10 days (really funky stuff - the UK Pavilion is especially brilliant)

Cheers.

-Pete

Wow! That looks like it works pretty well! I don't quite follow how you attached the 2 inch white velcro to the Deep Octo. Could you post a pic showing how its attached? Thanks!

I remember someone posting a link to a knock off grid for the deep octa on POTN a while ago, but now I can't find it...

OP, do you have a link to where you got yours?

Yeah, where did you get the grid? You didn't sew it yourself, did you?

Good job. Looks good!

Looks pretty darn good. Nice job. At least you didn't have to make the actual grid.

Hey guys,

I live in Shanghai - and bought it locally. It's actually a 'Jin Bei' 90 cm grid. There has to be cheap ebay 90 cm (36") grids floating around, no? About the white velcro, yeah - here's a quick snap:

As you can see each one is strategically positioned so that the existing black velcro (sleeves where the rods go through) can attach to it without perfectly landing on center.

Thanks Robert,

That was the next step. If this didn't work I was going to show them the 27" Rotogrid and say 'here, do this' Afterall, this is China and they are good at copying stuff

The tailor did a good job with that white Velcro. Looks clean.

SUPER suggestion!
My hood arrived a few days ago and using the rod sleeves completely defeats the purpose of the deep octa's quick set up advantage. Seems like the velcro was placed on the hood for later updates of the DO.

Just bought 2" wide industrial velcro in white and black from amazon.
I plan to take hood to my tailor to sew black velcro on properly.
Did you just stick the white velcro to the side of the rods? or directly under the rods?

thanks for a great tip!

It looks good, but he had ceased to be DEEP!!! Octobox Deep Octa 70 & 100 from Elinchrom are valuable precisely because of the unique "Deep geometry". Such a grid turns a Deep Octa in Shallow Octa. To keep all the advantages Deep Octa, the grid must be placed outside.
