Even the support races are fun.
#1 Roger Lee Hayden (95) and Jason Disalvo fought it out the entire race.
#2 Even the back markers provided good action.

Here is a photo that has not been cropped. You should be able to see left hand turn 8 then 8a as it starts the five story drop. Sorry the catch fence is in the way. Some of the fencing is new this year.
Thanks for looking and commenting.

Yeah but Andy, he has such inspiration

hi skip, great photos. i'm curious how you setup and where you take the shots from. i was at the race but my photos didn't turn out as sharp as yours.

i tried standing just at the infield side of the bridge at the corkscrew initially but decided it wasn't so good of a spot... i'm an avid amateur and trying to absorb/learn as much as possible.

Thanks for the compliment. I owe my good shots to my 70-300 DO IS and luck. I like to shoot the corkscrew from an area just up the track from where you described. The fences were different this year and made it a little tougher as did the huge crowds. IMNHO the best place for shooting corkscrew is between the fences just below 8a, there is even a cut out in the catch fence there.
The other photos are actuallu taken from the turn 4 grandstand.

and https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=86131 I hope this helps.

do you do any post processing on your photos? so far i haven't even tried, other than cropping. my best shots came from rainey curve (turn 9) and turn 10 (our camp site was was the second spot at the exit of the corner). i had a heck of a time finding enough room to rotate my shoulders to follow the bikes, even in the camp site. but man, are those bikes incredible!

here's a shot of mr. hayden in the open laps exiting turn 9.

I do very little post processing. I mostly use Picasa2 which is not nearly as sophisticated as Elements, never mind Photoshop. I mostly just crop and export for web. I occasionally add a little fill light, one sharpening pass and the like. Picasa is fairly simple. I am not good at PP so I don't do it much. I've got to get ppast this hang up :-)

hmmmm... sharpening, i'll have to give that a try.

i was thinking last night about how to get my photos a bit sharper. i was using iso 100 because of the bright sun, i should probably have used 200 or 400 to get a faster shutter speed which in turn would provide a sharper image. wish i had thought of that while i was at the race, but theres always next time. just wish i could see a full screen view of the photos right after taking them, as opposed to waiting until i get home.

Some lenses are sharper than others. You can usually work around this by using a tighter aperture. Will may need a higher ISO at a fast enough shutter speed to stop everything.
Einstien was right. All is relative ;-)a

More great shots Skip!

I actually like the uncropped photo of the corkscrew turn; catch fences and all. It gives a sense of the speed involved changing from left turn to right turn...in addition to the elevation drop.

Now for Yamaha girls, I have to ask. Didn't you bring your reflector and your 420EX for the fill flash? Surely they would have been glad to stand for as long as it took to get a suitable picture to post on the glamour forum. You did tell them you were from The World Famous Photography-on-the.net forum, right ??
:D :D

i was using my just-purchased canon 100-400 L. it's definitely the best lens i've ever owned and now i'm hooked, looking at other L's. i'll have to do some more testing soon...

I don't see it as much of a hang-up. It's far better to get it right in the camera in the first place, anyway. Like you I do very little post processing.
