I've been using my 1DM2n for how many months already but I can't get satisfied on the results...

Just wondering if I can get a little help from the 1dm2/n owners to share their camera settings all the way to CFn settings aside from using/copying the sport's illustrated (external link) suggested settings for 1dm2...

Thank you

What is it you want different on the camera is it the JPEGS you get out of the camera. Is it the Auto-focus? Is it the general button set-up?

NatureScapes did some good guides on C.Fn and P.Fn settings. I'm sure many of us on POTN are able to help you we just need to know what the problems are and what you want from your camera (what are you shooting, what are your shooting habbits etc. etc.)

Well I have the back button AF enabled without the exposure lock option. I have all the AF points selectable and disable the auto-point selection with the personal function. If I'm shooting motorsport then I set the AF to moderate slow. If I'm doing portraits then I use moderate fast. and anything such as field sports then I set it to fastest. I turn off all expansion unless it's football (soccer to americans) when the teams are playing in either white or red. Then I set it to the 7 point. My assist button is the centre point when held. I find that like this I can have the centre point registered and then quickly reselectand deselect it after shooting somewhere else in the frame. I also have drive speed priority selected.

Three of my other favourites are:

To have the return to setup X button on when the two buttons that engage clear are held. I have that as Av evaluative metering etc. just what you need to grab a shot.

I also have the C.Fn 8 set to option 1. That works best more me and I find it much more intuitive.

To have the silent shutter mode on all the time. I usually leave the speed on high but if I'm shooting single frames and don't care about noise it goes into low. However if I'm shooting in a noise sensitive enviroment I can just chuck it into single frames, then I don't need to change a setting.

There the main things I like but there are plenty of others. I also reccomend using the WB adjust on the camera that really sorts out the jpegs as does shooting AdobeRGB.

Any one got a .CSD file for the MKIIN with 7 shot bracketing enabled?

Cheers

Thank you

I just got a 1D2n too and it took a little messing around with the custom settings to get what I wanted. But now I love it.

I have it set on 9 focus points. The thumb wheel cycles through the outer focus points without having to press the focus point selection button. The WB button selects the center point. It's perfect, it feels so fast and so natural.

To *0D users: It is much better than having the thumb wheel cycle through the center point as well. Much less confusing under time pressure.

wow that's clever, I had been trying to think of a way to make it easier to just get back to center point in a second

My settings (1D Mark II)

Jpg quality S:4, M2:6, M1:8, L:10 though I shoot in RAW 99% of the time
Color matrix CM1: AdobeRGB, standard saturation, color tone -2
Review: On, with info
Review time: 4 seconds
In camera noise reduction off
ISO expansion on

Highlight alert off
AF points in review on
Histogram in RGB

C.Fn 01 - Finder display on during exposure (1) Doesn't really matter
C.Fn 02 - Shutter release without card not possible (1) I've been burned a couple of times
C.Fn 04 - Generally AE/AF, no AE lock (3 though for certain situations I turn AE lock on (1)
C.Fn 05 - Shutter speed on back dial, aperture on top dial a holdover from the settings on my old 30D
C.Fn 06 - 1/3, 1/3 (0) for maximum flexibility
C.Fn 07 - Set to 0 but it doesn't matter as I don't own any electronic MF lenses
C.Fn 08 - ISO on top LCD, remaining shots on back LCD quick glance down to see my card status
C.Fn 09 - -,0,+/No cancellation (3) personal preference, though I rarely use bracketing
C.Fn 10 - Brighter (3) preference
C.Fn 11 - Default AF point selection (0) again, personal preference
C.Fn 12 - Mirror lockup off (0) unless I need it for a long exposure
C.Fn 13 - 11 manual AF points, spot metering slaved to active AF point (1) I generally don't need manual selection of all 45 points, and when I use spot metering, I prefer to meter on my focal point which is usually off center
C.Fn 14 - Evaluative (0) default, most of my flash is neither TTL nor on camera
C.Fn 15 - 2nd curtain sync (1) preference
C.Fn 16 - Safety shift off (0) I prefer the body not override my settings
C.Fn 17 - Expansion off (0) I prefer the quicker response and less tendency for the AF to stray
C.Fn 18 - Only while pressing "X" button (2) essentially a dual back button AF activation
C.Fn 19 - Stop button normal function (0) default, I don't own any glass with an AF stop button
C.Fn 20 - Moderate fast tracking (3) personal preference
C.Fn 21 - Servo priority enabled (1) sometimes I'll disable it with indoor sports or low light servo shooting to save buffer space

P.Fn 01 (on) - M and Av only Tv, P, and bulb disabled as I don't use them
P.Fn 02 (on) - Evaluative disabled I don't use it
P.Fn 03 (off) - Defaults to spot when enabled, but I generally don't use the function unless I need to lock out the other modes
P.Fn 04 (off) - I would use this function if it allowed me to lock out speeds under 1/125
P.Fn 05 - Not used
P.Fn 06 - Not used
P.Fn 07 - Not used
P.Fn 08 (off) - Set to 5 bracketed shots generally disabled unless I need it
P.Fn 09 - Not used
P.Fn 10 - Not used
P.Fn 14 (off) - Focus search off disabled unless I'm having issues that day
P.Fn 15 (off) - AF assist off disabled, I'll activate it if I'm using an on camera flash and need to be discrete
P.Fn 16 - Not used
P.Fn 17 (off) - Automatic AF point selection off switched on while shooting sports
P.Fn 18 - Not used
P.Fn 19 (off) - Servo speed L:2 H:6 disabled unless I need to slow down the servo for some reason
P.Fn 20 (off) - Continuous shots limited to 3 optional "burst" mode, generally disabled
P.Fn 21 (off) - Quiet mode standby, depending on the situation
P.Fn 23 - Not used
P.Fn 24 - Not used
P.Fn 25 - Not used
P.Fn 26 (on) - Shortened release time lag on personal preference
P.Fn 27 - Not used
P.Fn 28 - Not used
P.Fn 30 (on) - Both dials switched preference, locks all dial settings with one switch
P.Fn 31 - Not used

For shooting sports in AI servo, I'll usually have one back button set for portrait orientation, and the other for landscape orientation. If I'm shooting in one orientation, I'll leave the X button set to center high, and move the * button focus point to wherever I need it at the moment.

For shooting static subjects in one shot mode, I switch to automatic AF point selection unless I'm having difficulty or aiming for a specific focal point.
