Hello all,

I need some suggestions for a rolling laptop case. It needs to be small enough
to fit as a carry-on bag. I'd prefer it to be able to hold a fair list of items:

  • Laptop (15.4" screen [Toshiba Satellite L305D-S5934])
  • One days worth of clothes (e.g., jeans and a polo)
  • Cell phone, mp3 player, note pad, pens, one or two files, chargers for all the above
  • Wireless laptop mouse kit
I figure if it is rolling then I can strap my camera backpack onto the handles.
I'm still new to flying (just flew my 5th flight) and, despite the fact that I am terrified of
heights, I'll be flying every other weekend for the next 3-30 months for a work project.

So I really need to find a better solution then having 2 backpacks (1 for my laptop, 1 for my camera).
I'd prefer not to get a laptop/camera combo bag either.

I was looking at the Case Logic TNR-216 (external link) but I can't find hardly any reviews.
Any suggestions? I really don't want to spend $200+ on a laptop bag...

Note: You can edit my photo just tell me how you did it ;)

I am using the Skooba (Tenba) R101-151 CheckThrough Laptop Roller Case. It "butterflies" open to reveal your laptop per TSA guidelines when going through security. The laptop section will hold your 15" Toshiba and possibly even a 17" MacBook Pro. The bag carries the "CheckThrough" logo which is supposed to be recognized by TSA personnel and allowed through the X-Ray without removal of the computer (it must be the ONLY item in the laptop section). This bag is also small enough to easily fit in small jet overhead bins and under the seat, and is hopefully small enough to not be selected for "gate check" when boarding small regional jets.

If you aren't challenged by the TSA agent (they CAN make you remove it anyway), you will have a single item to keep track of, your laptop will not be out loose and exposed, and you can simply grab the handle and go to the area where you can zip it up again, put your shoes back on, reload your pockets, and pull your pants back up and put on your belt)

I selected this one because I could modify it slightly by cutting off the divider in the "luggage" section and it will accommodate my loaded TT Urban Disguise 40 camera bag plus other small stuff such as cables, chargers, GPS, etc. It will also hold other camera shoulder bags such as my Billingham Hadley Pro, UD-30, UD-35, Multimedia-20 or simply a Tenba insert. Once at my destination, I can simply remove the shoulder bag for walking around.

If I need additional space when returning home (too many purchases ), I can always load the excess stuff into the roller and carry my camera bag (actually, slide it over the handle to ride on the roller bag).

I would just use a standard carryon piece of luggage and put the laptop into one of those neoprene sleeves and put that into the main compartment of the bag! (You mentioned no photography equipment.)

They do routine cavity searches in the airports in your part of the country?! Please let me know if that is true, so that I don't fly there. bw!

Well, no cavity searches ... yet! I have had them make me remove my belt, turn my pants waist seam over (usually requires un-hooking the clip or button), hold my arms straight out, and lift one leg at a time for the scanner. It may take a lot of skill to keep your pants up in this situation.:lol::lol: Meanwhile, you are trying to keep your eye on your bag, computer, shoes, etc. because no one else is watching them for you.

this is precisely why i pick a pair of pants to wear on days that i'm going through airport security that i don't need a belt for...i don't want to give security any reason to separate me from my stuff (which lately includes both my laptop and camera), and i want to get through there as quickly as possible...

as for the op's question, there are dozens and dozens of bags that can do that job for you, it really comes down to personal preference...i'd suggest searching amazon (duh) and also ebags...my main carry on is an ebags branded bag and it's built to survive a nuclear event (mother lode mini 21")...

ebags makes a nice vertically-oriented laptop bag (called the perspective) that might be easier to roll down airline aisles too, compared to some bags that orient your laptop horizontally: http://www.ebags.com …tterm=ebags%20perspective (external link)

good luck

A few days ago I was stopped by the TSA counter agent who said I would have to check my Skooba bag. He picked it up and I thought he was worried about the weight, but he took it over to the bag size test-frame and said it was too big for carry-on. I glanced at the dimensions posted on the test-frame and noted they were exactly the size of my bag except mine was shorter.

The TSA agent proceeded to set my bag on top of the frame and said it was too big (wide) to fit. I suggested he turn it sideways 90 degrees ... and of course it slid right in with no problem. Geeeze....

Based on my (limited) experience with flying? Yes...
But it still doesn't bother me as much as the whole "heights" thing does.
And it doesn't help being a smoker either

I'm going to check out the different suggestions later on today.
I haven't been able to check previously (spotty WiFI @the hotel).

I'll let you guys know what I end up ordering tonight :D
