I'm about to put this shot forward to a client, but I'm having an issue with it. I really like it, but my assistant feels the complete opposite. I'm completely willing to bin the picture if it's crap, but I personally like the shot, so it's clouding my judgement.

THe main issue is nothing to do with the composition, or the pose, but just the face and how much shadow is falling on it. Have I created an atmospheric shot, or have I gone too far?

Thanks in advance.

I think it depends on the client. It is very sinister. If your client would like that, then I think you have a winner. My first impression is that it is technically good but not the flavor for me. Client is king. If your client is a professional, they might get more mileage from something a little warmer.

Thanks Poloman, one of the briefs was "Dirty filthy grimy", does that change your opinion in any way?

I really like the shot.

But reading your follow-up, I have to admit that the shot doesn't make me think dirty, filthy or grimy. Dark and sinister for sure, but it actually strikes me as clean and crisp.

I would definitely let the client take a look before deciding to throw it in the bin, I suspect it may be exactly what they were wanting.

Thanks krb, I guess it won't hurt to ask him if he likes it. I'll just say it was one that personally struck me.

OK thanks a lot. Decision made.

I personally like it. To me the shot is very masculine and I think a man would like it better then a female would. (that is if the client was having it done for himself or as a picture to give to his girlfriend)

I personally think the black on the left where you cannot see the jacket is "too dark" - it looses detail.

But I suppose it really depends on what your client wants...

My first impression (at a glance) was 'face is very dark'.

I then read your request/comment and looked at the picture more closely and wasn't sure that I liked 'how far you had gone'.

I then read your further comment about the client brief and thought immediately that it no way the picture said to me "dirty filthy grimy".

Obviously the client's opinion is what counts. It's certainly a professional offering to put forward for their consideration.

I too agree with pretty much what everybody else said. It really depends on the client. Me personally, if i was looking for a shot of me to put on a flyer that shows me as a DJ, I would really like it. For my taste, I really like it. But like many already said, I think it depends on the clients taste.

Good luck.

Hey thanks for all the feedback everyone, some great stuff there, I really appreciate it. I sent it off, and he liked it!

Still doesn't say much as to my ability to deliver a brief though!

Thanks again.

Blood hell, that's a good idea, why didn't I think of that?

I'll have a go now.

Man, this forum is awesome sometimes.

I was just about to suggest that as well. Just to see what happens.

Other than that, I think it's a great shot.
