I have two 70-200 L non-IS lens, both older, one is the f/4 and one is the f/2.8. I recently purchased an EF 1.4 II Canon extender to use with them (along with my 400 L5.6) on an upcoming trip. The extender has a larger diameter than any of the three lenses, although it seems to function properly on all three.

So... is there a smaller diameter extender that I should be using and/or are there any concerns with using the larger diameter extender with these lenses. It all seems to seal properly, and as I said, functions fine. But what am I missing? Is the older mrk I extender the same diameter and should I be trading for that?

Thanks for any thoughts or ideas here.

There is only one Canon 1.4x TC on the market right now and youve got it. I have never heard of anyone mentioning this issue, but Im sure everything is as it should be. As long as youve tested it and it works well youre okay :)

You won't have any problem with the combo you have, but for the record, there is an alternative TC/extender manufacturer (Kenko) who's TC's do not have an extended section at the body end, and that allows the TC to work with nearly all Canon lenses such as the 100mm macro, the 85mm f/1.8 etc, which Canon engineered in such a way that it isn't possible with their own TC's. Many of us have the Kenko teleplus for that reason.

Hope that helps.

Thanks Ben. I used to have a 2.0X Canon extender, but it was the same size (dia.) as the lens I had at the time, including the 70-200 L f/4, at least I don't remember it being larger. I was thinking that maybe the TC I's were smaller around that the TC II's. But yes, seems to work fine, just steps down (in size) where it meets the lens. I was thinking that maybe the II version, because they are more weather proof, are larger.

That's good to know, maybe I'll migrate that way. Are they more, or less that the Canon TC's? I can always sell this one, and buy the other if they are more universal.

Thanks guys.
