I have been using a sigma 18-50 for a walk around for a year or two and it has been working fine for me. Recently had an accident described here https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=845484

I got the bill back and they want to replace the main barrel rear barrel main pcb for about $200 total. Plus the fact that a new/used lens isn't too much more.

I was hoping it wouldn't be this expensive because I have been looking to get a sigma 30mm for a while. Fixing this now might put delay this purchase.

So I need advice... Do I fix it now and wait for the prime, or go for the 30mm now and fool around with that till I get around to repairing it later. My brother has canon lenses as well so in a pinch I could borrow his 28-135 if need be. Thoughts?

Get the prime - it will be a more fun purchase. Getting something that you want will motivate you more than getting something that you have to out of necessity. The Sigma 30/1.4 is a fantastic lens and serves as a normal lens on a crop body. It's a great focal length for all-round use. You will also appreciate the speed of the lens and you'll see a significant increase in image quality (especially at f/2 and beyond).

Hmm... well, fixing is sure cheaper than buying a new one... up to you I guess.
