I have both, and for art/landscape, i'd go with the sigma 17-70!! :-)

from what i've seen the tamron 17-50 non-vc goes for at least $350 used and they go fairly quickly on here. since you only have the 50 f1.8 right now i'd also say go for the 18-55 IS and 55-250 IS.

I will recommend Tamron 17-55mm, if you look hard enough at the sell section of this forum a used copy can be found for $300- $350 range.

For a budget starter combo, it's hard to beat that 18-55 and 55-250. Good choice!

18-55 IS and 430exII flash.

Should run you about $300 and should. keep you busy for a while. ;)

Edit: Just realized that you said you shot mostly outside. That flash would do good for that birthday you were talking about, but since it's going to be outside most of the time, I would say +(what ever number we are up to now) on the 18-55 IS/ 55-250 IS combo. :D
