Even in an area where dramatic sunsets and strange cloud formations are not unknown this was a pretty bizarre formation.

I'd love to see other posts of unusual or dramatic sky-scapes.

Very good question Magwai. No they weren't long exposures...the first was 1/160 at f11 and the other was 1/80 at f10.

If you look closely at the originals (lost a bit in reducing the for POTN) you can see sharp detail on parts of them, but the nature of wind-sculpted clouds like these, and true lenticular clouds which are similar, is that they look smooth. When you look at them through binoculars you find that they are incredibly "busy", forming on one side and dissipating on the other, but all the while looking like polished stone.

This isn't the most wild sky, but it was the leading edge of a storm that was. This was taken at Horse Lake in the Boundary Waters Canoing Are in Minnesota.

This was taken last year after a tornado touched through the area...

This is my very first post, so I apologize if I've screwed this up... LOL

This was taken at Hampton Beach NH last year when Hurricane Bill made it's way up the coast.

( woo hoo ! preview leads me to believe I've figured this out ! ) :)

Thanks Jeff...yes it was pretty weird...looks like a massive jet engine!

Tracypyles - thanks for posting...no you didn't screw it up. Did that hurricane precursor turn into anything much worse?

No, it left it's mark further south. Thankfully.... lol

we had some messy beaches for a bit, some stone taken across the road that follows the shore, but that's really the worst of it.

I'll tell ya though, for a photographer, the waves were the most amazing I've ever seen. We went from Hampton up to York to the Nubble Lighthouse... there were Canon's everywhere !

I like them too...and you even know the names of them.
I would appreciate you naming any of the other formations you see on this thread and can identify. I know a few, but not many.
