Saw it on Craigslist:

This has just been modified.

Specs:
Carl Zeiss T* Front Objective and using Zeiss fets.
47% increased in contrast & sat & scratch resistant coating.
Lutetium (AI5Lu3012) and Rhodium Ring Motor (AF), IS and contact pins.
NASA waterproof seals & gaskets.
Titanium screws.
Inconel 625 on lens mount.
AISI 4130 installed, modified and replaced on many weak bearing gears.
Tested at NIST.

Modified Len Hood is available.
Only $1,800.00, much better than Canon's.
Built-in ATG GPS w/solar panel. Power from solar runs the Ring Motor(USM).

This lens is made out of metal, not like these cheap (16-35/2.8L,50/1.0L,85/1.2L,24-70/2.8L/24-105/4.0L) overpriced plastic lens.

If you can't afford the regular model, then you don't need to ask without posting your name & office number.

It's for sale.

I suppose this is the one you are referring too...

It's probably just a scam. You'll learn to recognize them pretty easily.

EDIT: Ah, read the listing a little more closer. The lens hood is $1,800 not the lens. There is no price on the lens. Guess the only way to find out if it is real is to ask for more info and look at the reply. The reply will tell you if it's a scam or if it may be legit. But of course, the specs sound kind of far-fetched don't ya think?

NASA is branding seals and gaskets for lenses now? :-) GPS & solar panel to run the USM? umm... what?? sounds more like a lens to mount on a satellite or something... then in the next line in compares this lens to "cheap" short prime and regular zoom Canon lenses, so that makes it pretty fishy in my book.

I know this guy. A big joke. Don't respond to him. He's selling something exotic like this sometimes back. After we exchanged a couple of e-mails he told me the price was $8000 or something crazy like that (the same can be had for about 2.5K from amazon) just because hood was made of Indonesian wood! I told him politely NO. But he wouldn't leave me. He said they also offer classes for photography. I said NO. Then asked me another e-mail saying they also sell good quality WINE :p Jesus!

Edit: I work at NIST :p

Either someone is really having fun pulling the chain, or someone did pimp their lens.

Ok, got a reply:

Dear Drs. Alonso/Carl/Smith/Visi, AP, HMS, JHMC, NASA, NIH, SI, WPPI, Mike, Susan and Redskins Staff Photographers,

Canon 600 regular hood is around $500.00.
Canon regular 600/4.0L IS is around $9,000.00.

http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/doc/pho/1706343017.html (external link)
This model has been modified.
The hood is $1,800.00.
The lens is $28,500.00.

AP and SI are interested.

My uncle is still working in the lab.
Just answering his mails.

Truly,
Angela

I don't think it is a scam, as those have to be subtle. The ad was probably posted by a mentally ill person, so take it easy on him. :-(

no it's posted by a person who knows what he's doing. Read my post above. I think what he wants is just your e-mail so that he can advertise other things like photography class and good quality wine and God knows what else.

Mine had a Flux capacitor, but the ripple it puts time space continueum played hell with shutter speeds. Not to mention it's a very "80's" technology. How gouche.
