Thinking that it would be buried in the ground isn't very logical. It would only be traveling at its teminal velocity by the time it reached the ground after spending the last couple of miles in the atmosphere. Wouldn't be going any faster if you dropped it off a tall building. With no more weight than it actually has I wouldn't expect much of an impact crater. I would have it checked for radiation if it did come from space, before I would spend too much time handling it too.

Looks like an old aluminium pot complete with lid (hole for knob on top), possibly Teflon or enamel-lined. If it had paper in it, it was probably some kid burning a dirty magazine he wasn't supposed to have, or someone destroying photo/document evidence.

It's the size of a quarter. That would have to be one tiny pot. And no something that size and weight would most likely not make a crater if it is space junk.
