Battery + gaffer tape = !?

WARNING >> pretty dump question, plz dont expect much << WARNING

Ok, so I have about 15 of those 5D2 batteries and I wanted to mark them separately for my video 5D and for my photo 5D. What I wanted to do, is just put gaffer tape on the bottom of these batteries and mark them for camA or camB and number them accordingly. Will that somehow endanger my existence on this planet? what I mean is ... is it save to put gaffer's tape or electrical tape or any sort of tape on batteries to mark them? They can get warm after a while and I dont want the glue to start melting and destroying the inside of my camera. I would just use some sort of a marker but the battery itself is black-ish so I wouldn't be able to see it anyway.

ya but my local target didn't have any other color then black. So I'm just sitting here, looking at those batteries, then looking at my gaffers tape ... then looking at my batteries again ... and then looking and my gaffers tape again and its pretty tempting to just tape em all ^^

Just for the record, you guys were supposed to say that its ok to put gaffers tape on my batteries.

HAHA. well i asked myself the same question and my wife gave me that link.... and we all know wife knows best.

Definitely do it then take your camera out and leave it in the glove box in the car. Then park it in an unshaded spot. Make sure to upload a video to youtube of your face when you open the camera.

Tape, especially gaffer's or duct tape, might well keep the batteries from fitting well. Get a paint marker (also available in individual colours). The reason I wouldn't use silver is that the metallic markers might flake and cause problems. I use those for lots of things, just not batteries.

Like everyone else has said, just use a marker. Besides Staples, you can always find multi-colored Sharpies at Walgreens...

I wanted to put just a little bit of gaffers tape on the bottom on the battery so its never "inside" of the camera, even when the grip is attached. Compact flash cards can get warm and they have labels in the back to write on. right!? so I should be fine ^^ I'll get some paint markers too but I would prefer not to permanently write stuff on my batteries.

Batteries can get warm when they recharge, or if you're really exercising the camera. And that does nasty stuff to most adhesives.
I must say, I don't see why you want to keep the batteries separated by camera; I'd just number them sequentially (use a black Sharpie on the label maybe if you don't want to use paint) and use them in whichever camera came up next.

Exactly. Me too.

About that gaffers tape. It works well in the short term like taping down power cords and other usefull things. When removed, it doesn't leave a sticky residue.
But leave it there and let it get warm and the adhesive will become gooey. I have some wrapped around my monopod and now it is a mess. One of these days I will remove it. I am dreading that little task.

Label makers should work well for you. They did for me.

Try some surgical/medical tape. It's white, it's thin, has strong adhesive but not gooey and is inexpensive. you can then use a regular permanent sharpie to label them.

If it's on the bottom of the battery where the door closes I don't see it interfering.

Just take a sharp object, like a knife, and scratch a 1 on the back of 1 battery and a 11 on the other.
