I thought this 1/2 moon looked a little different?

Very nice shot Peter. Although the Moon is always 1/2 illuminated by the sun with the exception of a Lunar eclipse, the phase shown in your image is the quarter Moon phase. Titled by the position of the Moon in its orbit cycle rather than the visible illumination from Earth. It reaches this phase in our sky twice its orbit with the other quarter positions being the New and Full phases.

A quarter can also be called a half moon. Same thing, even though (yes) the moon is always half-lit.

Thank you. bw!

Great shot! This type of moon is also known as Peony Moon, Wild cat moon or flower moon depending on which culture you take it from.

Why do they call what looks like a 1/2 Moon a 1/4 moon then when we see the side that faces us totally illuminated it's called a full moon? When in fact what we call the full Moon is only 1/2 Illuminated. ;-)a

Waning or waxing, Gibbous or Crescent. Less confusing. :-D

Nice shot btw, I might have tried to frame it closer to the center, and, possibly try to sharpen it with HPF or USM a little bit.

Thanks for thei info and comments all.

I did USM it a little Tim. It's sharper at full size
I tried to stay within the bounds of the 3rds rule. Sometimes I like to go outside teh rules though .

Not bad, you could try to up the contrast on the Maria (big dark gray areas) a little more, right now the entire surface of the moon is a little bland.
