My wife is with Raptor Recovery Nebraska. We had the
privilege of caring this little one found on the ground by a fisherman in Dodge Nebraska, It is on it's way to surrogate owl mother "OwlBerda". This picture taken after first feeding. (Chopped up mice... yuk)
She should be the first sight when eyes first open. It is doing very well thus far.
What is the white protrusion on beak ? Dig out your bird books folks. I know this. Just checking.

I'm hoping to spark some interest. Thanks for the reply Karen. It is a learning experience for me too.
We have been with Raptor Recovery for almost two years now. It has been most rewarding ! I am very honored to participate with Nebraska Raptor Recovery. What a great group of caring people !

I'm following a couple of GHO nests but I've never seen an owlet this small. I was out this evening at a nest and the youngster was only peeking out of the cavity. Organizations like this do such good work. I have been to the Raptor Conservancy of Virginia to photograph the unfortunate rescues that were too injured to be released and they provide the public a unique opportunity to gain an appreciation of these birds. Great shot and I'm looking forward to an update.

Very cute and that is so much younger and smaller than the one we found a couple of weeks ago..Our Wild Bird Care Centre took care of it and a climber rebuilt the nest that had blown apart from wind and put the owlet back in the nest a few days klater but to no avail. The owlet is now at The Owl Foundation in Toronoto being raised by a Great Horned Owl who is also raising two others. It will learn to hunt and be released in October in the same area it would have grown up in if it had not fallen from its nest ( almost 50 feet up)

Cute chick. I like how you managed the background so the chick pops even with the similar textures and competing colour ranges.

Great stuff Gary. I am hopeful we will get to perform the release of our little one when the time comes.
