Don't know if this has been brought up before. Did a quck search of the forum and couldn't seem to find anything.

I'm curious as to why Canon use different names for the Rebel Series in different markets.

300d, 350d, 400d,450d, 500d & 550d etc is much easier to follow than Xs, Xsi, Xt, Xti, T1i, T2i,

They don't seem to do it with the XXD Series or the 1D Series.
So why choose the entry level series to confuse the hell out of people.

Here in Aus, the number system is used and when I get on here and see a thread something like "Xti/Xt/Xs etc question - Help" I've got no idea what body the poster is referring to.
I sometimes use a 400d in addition to the 1D MkII and 40D but couldn't tell you what Rebel model is the equivalent.

I'm not going to slash my wrists over it, but it just confuses the daylights out of me.

Here in Canon-Land, the Rebel series is the "Rebel Kiss" plus whatever number/letter combo.
I guess it's because the marketing men thought that "kiss" somehow created the right "feeling" in potential customers - who are mostly coming from P&S cameras accessorised with diamante and rainbow colour stick-on strips (no joke).
Mere numbers, such as 30D, 7D or 1DMkIV are far too "serious" over here, and reek of someone who actually might know what they're doing.

And yet here, while the U.S. automakers were still naming cars with names like Malibu, Mustang, and Impala, you guys at least named a few Datsuns with those "serious" numbers, remember the 210, 520, and something I SHOULD have bought, the little 240Z?

Much like Honda's CBR900RR called Fireblade in other countries. Or Yamaha's YZF600R (not R6) aka Thundercat or the YZF1000 (not R1) aka Thunderace.

Or why the Nissan Navara is called Frontier in the US.

I go by different names in different places as well. But most of those names I shouldn't repeat.

Thank you. bw!

makes a lot of sense in the rebel/ xxxD line to aviod using numbers as much as possible so not to intimidate potential buyers coming from no DSRL experience. so you go into a store, there are 2 rebel models (1st time buyer ignoring all xxD and xD cameras cuz canon doesn't advertise them on TV), one is 12mp and the other is 15mp, with different price tags, it makes the decision pretty simple.

if the customer went to a camera store, saw a 500D, but went home and couldn't remember if it was a 500D or 50D or 550D or 5D... and tried to ask his buddies which one is better for him... well, he's screwed.

But aren't the xxxD series cameras marketed as Rebels only in the US?? In Asia (except Japan), Europe, Australia they are still marketed as xxxD..

It appears only for the North American market they have been re-named..

Yes, that is right. I think it goes back to your long lunch theory....;)

One honest explanation is that it makes it easier to track grey market goods. You know a 450D for sale in the US is a grey market camera because it should say Rebel XSi instead. So perhaps they are not as concerned with that in the rest of the world?

It's marketing slang.

The rebel moniker is probably due to the stereotypical North American "cowboy" figure in pop culture - everyone wants to stand out.

I always heard that the "Kiss" name for Japan was because the Rebel/XXXD line was marketed towards Japanese women (small bodies for smaller hands).

They call it a rebel because Americans are rebels. We bucked the system. We started WAY after most of the other countries, and then went against the grain and now OWN all the other countries. We're tough. We're cool. We're rebels.

Either than or the Japanese know we're suckers for things that are shiny, make fancy noises, and have cool gimmicky names like Tundra, Frontier, Terminator, or in this case: rebel.

Thank you. bw!
