Apple's Camera Connection Kit for the iPad has shipped and users are starting to report their success/findings. One kind fellow took the time to share a 2-3 minute video of using the Camera Connection Kit's SD card adapter with the iPad:

In my opinion, that looks like it works pretty darn slick! Well done Apple!
Now the really good news... A fellow on MacRumor's forum has tested the Camera Connection Kit's USB adapter with his USB card reader for Compact Flash!! He says it works perfectly! Just plug the USB adapter into the iPad, plug the USB card reader into the USB adapter, and plug in your CF card. The import feature then launches on the iPad, exactly as it does with the SD card adapter in the video above.
And the iPad reportedly supports all of the popular RAW formats. I'm waiting for clear confirmation on the Canon 5D Mark II RAW files (my camera) but I strongly suspect the iPad will support it just fine.
This makes the iPad a pretty nifty way to view and backup/store your images in the field. If you wanted to keep an iPad strictly for use with photography, it would be quite easy to have at least 50-55GB of free space for photos. That would hold over 2,000 5D Mark II RAW files. Nice! And I'd have a nice big screen to view them on.
I'm not suggesting that the iPad will replace a laptop computer for every situation. But the iPad definitely has a useful spot in some photographer's bags.
Oh, BTW, users are also reporting that USB keyboards and USB headphones work perfectly with the Camera Connection Kit's USB adapter. So, it's sounds like Apple put a pretty robust USB controller inside the iPad. I foresee some VERY interesting photography applications coming for the iPad. Possibly even a tethering app that works in conjunction with an iPhone as the wireless remote viewer and shutter release via Bluetooth or WiFi. Such an app already exists for the iPhone used with a laptop tethered to the camera. The iPad version can't be far behind.
