Apple's Camera Connection Kit for the iPad has shipped and users are starting to report their success/findings. One kind fellow took the time to share a 2-3 minute video of using the Camera Connection Kit's SD card adapter with the iPad:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GuW7Exs53bc (external link)

In my opinion, that looks like it works pretty darn slick! Well done Apple!

Now the really good news... A fellow on MacRumor's forum has tested the Camera Connection Kit's USB adapter with his USB card reader for Compact Flash!! He says it works perfectly! Just plug the USB adapter into the iPad, plug the USB card reader into the USB adapter, and plug in your CF card. The import feature then launches on the iPad, exactly as it does with the SD card adapter in the video above.

And the iPad reportedly supports all of the popular RAW formats. I'm waiting for clear confirmation on the Canon 5D Mark II RAW files (my camera) but I strongly suspect the iPad will support it just fine.

This makes the iPad a pretty nifty way to view and backup/store your images in the field. If you wanted to keep an iPad strictly for use with photography, it would be quite easy to have at least 50-55GB of free space for photos. That would hold over 2,000 5D Mark II RAW files. Nice! And I'd have a nice big screen to view them on.

I'm not suggesting that the iPad will replace a laptop computer for every situation. But the iPad definitely has a useful spot in some photographer's bags.

Oh, BTW, users are also reporting that USB keyboards and USB headphones work perfectly with the Camera Connection Kit's USB adapter. So, it's sounds like Apple put a pretty robust USB controller inside the iPad. I foresee some VERY interesting photography applications coming for the iPad. Possibly even a tethering app that works in conjunction with an iPhone as the wireless remote viewer and shutter release via Bluetooth or WiFi. Such an app already exists for the iPhone used with a laptop tethered to the camera. The iPad version can't be far behind.

That looks really awesome, I didn't think it'd work with raw files.

Apple announced RAW file compatibility since day one! It was mentioned when the iPad was announced at the end of January and it's been on Apple's web site ever since.

anyone know if the files that it transports over will be in "full" size? Right now when you sync them via ITUNES, it "optimizes" them and shirnks them to 1024x768, or a little bigger than that. I want it FULL size, so i can see all the detail... thanks.

I have no problem using LightRoom for this. It detects the iPad and will download the Raw's (5D mk II) and add them to my NAS library, and copy them to the catalog.

Perhaps Canon (and Apple) are listening. I guess it depends on how much control the image capturing part gives 2nd part apps. AFAIK, access is limited, at least according to an article I read a few days ago.

It's actually 2048x1364 or 2048x1536 depending on sensor format. When I upload to flickr or use PS mobile's app it's full res, though.

I know this is an old thread so I'm sorry for resurrecting it but it has a lot of views and was near the top in search results so I'm answering here only for the sake of others that also find this thread.

I can confirm the Camera Connection Kit (CCK) and iPad does support 5DII raw files. The built-in photos app only displays the reduced size internal JPG (the size quoted about seems about right) but the original raw file is left there completely untouched. Apps running on ipad don't have access to the original filename or most of the metadata but they can get the raw image or a JPG version of it. This is how the uploader (Flickr/PS mobile) apps work.

Lightroom and other programs are also able to download the original images (with their original filenames) directly from the iPad using the USB cable because the iPad properly implements the PTP transfer protocol (the same one your camera uses if you plug it in using a USB cable).

is this only on the new IPAD OS? does it work with the older 3.x one as well?

LOL Apple will now need to release a new version of iOS to ensure it doesn't work! (j/k)
