I'm trying to backup my pictures to a new external DVD burner I recently purchased (Sony 16x External DL DVD +- RW/CD-RW Drive) but I noticed that some backup software does not support certain hardware. I bought a backup package (I forget the name right now) but it does not even recognize the DVD burner even though I've used the burner using Sony Vegas to make slideshows.

I guess what I'm asking is what backup software do all of you use and how can you ensure that the software supports certain hardware? I tried searching for this subject but could only find how people organized their pictures the the hardware in which they perform backups.

Thanks.

Dan

I just use the 'Explorer' to drag the folders I want to backup to the CD.
That way, I'm sure that I will have the technology to write it back even if I come back to it in some years.

Of course, backup software is more convenient, but might become a problem if I don't have it any more in some years.

Best regards,
Andy

You can do it with Windows Explorer (XP only) by dragging the files to the DVD and then hitting "Write". Problem is it you are burning DVD (single = 4g dual layer = 8g), Windows has to make a copy of each file to your temp directory. This could be a little inefficient in large burns.

I use Nero Burning rom for all my burning needs. You can also find some freeware titles that allow you to throw a bunch of your photos on your hard drive into a (VOB) DVD video file. This can be burned as a DVD-Movie in Nero and watched on the family player in slide show fashion.

I am happy I just backedup last week and less than a week later, my cumputer crashed.

I am now backing up on an External 160 GB HD and DVD's, and then taking the DVD's off site to a safety deposit box , in case of fire or water damage.

There are some really cheap deals on External HD's

I am also using Nero burning ROM for CD's and DVD's.

Using software that came with my Dell PC (Sonic, I think now the same as Roxio), I back up files in the same process that I download them to my computer. I do not use DVD. I use CD. I've heard horror stories of the incompatibility of DVDs and of course as you say the incompatibility of some DVD burners. I use more disks obviously, but I have a product with no problems when I'm done.

Handy Backup is great. I sync my laptop and desktop external hard drive every morning so everything stays backed up. NEver even think about it now. Just does the job. Highly customisable and will even backup off-site over FTP.

I use back up software only with hard drives.. (external or multiple)

You can tell most any back up software to break up archives to specific sizes (assuming you are making archive files like zip etc...)

In either case.. I then burn these files to CD manually.. I've never found a backup program that was very CD-R freindly.

I use version backup on each startup to backup to a different partition. I use Photobackup to backup to DVD-RAM every 200 images and I do regular PSE3 catalog incremental backups. I have the LG4163 DVD-RAM burner and it works fine with all the SW I use . I also backload to my P2000

Karen's Replicator is great for backing up to a different drive. Free, too.
