I currently am looking to upgrade from my current camera Canon Rebel XTI and I have been looking around and came upon the Canon 1D Mark II which seems like it meets my needs for baseball photography. What do a couple of you more "pro" guys think?

Any of the 1 series camera's are excellent professional tools. The 1d mk II is a little long in the tooth but a solid workhorse and I still know plenty of pro's using them and the "N" version as well.

As with any older used item I'd recommend checking it out thoroughly before buying, but they are built like tanks and take pretty good abuse and keep on ticking.

As far as it being an upgrade to an xti, in my personal opinion the autofocus ability alone is enough to justify it as an adequate "upgrade" not even getting into the fps, build quality etc. The only thing its lacking to its modern equivalents is high ISO performance, video and a few megapickles.

just my 3c

the 1d mark II is a solid body and I would highly recommend it if you plan on upgrading.

yea the 1DmkII is a fantastic camera, but what lenses would you have to pair it up with?

I love my 1DII, but this is a good point. If you've been using EF-S lenses with your XTI, you should be aware that they will NOT mount on a 1DII.

The jump to the 1D Mark II is a quantum leap but be aware as others have said that if you lens stock is all EF-S lenses you will have to open the deep pocket again to up grade your lens selection. Have you looked at the 7D ? You don't loose the fps, but you do gain. If you shoot in most amateur venues, which are lighted much like dungeons especially in the outfield, give some thought about the fact that you will have to get a lens that allows you to shoot under those conditions, (hint at least a 70-200 2.8)

I went from an xti to a 7D and it has taken some time to get used to but well worth the effort. I would buy the most camera I could afford and learn how to use it.

I upgraded from a 10D to a MkII soon after the MkII came out and I'm still shooting with it tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of baseball pics later. IMO the MkII is one of the best bodies Canon has ever made for baseball.

Jerry ~ Baseball is a game where only defensive players handle the ball and offensive players who hit successfully in only one third of their at bats are among the best in the sport.

I have no doubt you get some great photos. When I was upgrading my 30D I considered a 1D Mark IIn I should have taken that choice, but I thought my needs at the time were better suited with a 5D Mark II. I should have trusted my instincts and gone with the 1D Mark IIn, but then the sales rep got the camera from the warehouse and took a look at it he found a few things and said he would not purchase the used one they had in stock. So I hope the camera fairy will leave a buy one get one free coupon

Very expensive glass jeez. Instead of making a new thread does anyone know of a Canon camera that can support my current lenses yet be around the same price range of the 1d used so under a grand.

Anything in the xxD range (20D, 30D, 40D, 50D). 7D will also work, although that's a bit more expensive.

I have been using the 40D for the past 3 years shooting cycling. Recently I got a Mk II N and now the 40D feels like a toy! It still takes great photos and I'm still quite pleased with the 40D, but just love the Mk II !
