Please ignore the watermark (it's for Facebook, where I posed the same question), but this little thing sped across next to me, pursued by some ants until it lost them around a particularly tricky grain of sand.
Then it stopped in some shade exactly where I could give it a blast from my be-snooted flash, plus 100mm macro and extension tubes.
I've measured the "thing" from the full-screen image and would say it's about 1.5mm long, including legs.
After I took some pics, it wandered off, down the wall and into a crack next to my right foot and didn't come out, so I guess it didn't mind me snapping away for a few seconds.
Any ideas what it was?
Cheers all,
Simon

Thanks all....I had no idea where to start trying to work out what it was, but now you've said it, yeah, must be some kind of "mite".

Never seen one (knowingly) before! :D

"Yay!" for macro!

Need to get my new 7D up and running now, to see what it can do with my be-snooted flash, 100 macro and extension tubes!!!
:D

My 1st reaction was it might be a tick but a chigger seems more likely. neither are welcome around me.

This isn't an insect at all. It's a piece of candy, specifically a Hot Tomale. I used to eat them all the time at the movies. Clearly this one has gotten so old and nasty that it up and walked away. Happens a lot in movie theaters.

Thank you. bw!

Mike....I fear for your sanity, almost as much as my own! ;)
