Are you dead set on keeping the existing iMac....and then adding a new computer to the mix?

Even though your iMac is dated, you'd be surprised how much people will still dish out to buy one used. That should *easily* make up any difference in cost that a i7 PC would save you, if you just bought a new PC outright.

Of course, you could still sell the iMac...and then save even more if you went with a PC as a replacement. But then you wouldn't be able to use OSX to do your other stuff (email, etc.).

Do not forget to consider the cost of software for the pc. Lightroom comes with Mac & PC versions. I am not sure what Adobe's policy is with the announcement of CS5.

My Lightroom cd says both Windows/Mac OS...

Unless someone can show me otherwise, I seriously can't imagine Adobe suddenly changing form with CS5 (vs. previous versions). I suspect it will be the same ole, same ole!

If you can wait, Dell Outlet often has 15-20% (25%) coupon on their desktops. You can usually get a killer PC for under $1000 and for identical specs for Mac would cost $1600-2200. If you want a 24" go for the Dell U2410 or HP ZR24W.
