If you're getting a blinking aperture, you're over, 3 stops I think) away from the correct exposure (too far off for the "needle" to show on the scale). The exposure level has 2 marks; one's fixed on the top of the scale in the center for a "book normal" exposure and the other is on the bottom and will move as you change shutter speed, aperture and/or ISO settings.
