So any news of a USB 3.0 reader yet? I am so desperate for one.

What cards will you be using it with to take advantage of the higher transfer speeds?

I haven't even seen a computer for sale with a USB 3.0 port.

You may want to see someone about that desperation. That's pretty extreme for a simple card reader.

Well USB 3.0 Express Cards and PCI Cards are out. Now all I need is a reader to transfer my 32GB Cards to my comp quickly enough after each shoot :(

There are definitely machines out there including Dell, Lenovo, etc. Not too many peripherals supporting it yet, but there are some as well.

The nice thing is USB 3 is backwards compatible with 2.

My CF cards are 45 megs/second (sandisk extreme IV) nowhere near USB 3 speeds.

I'm still interested in knowing what card you're using with a transfer speed exceeding that of USB 2.0.

There are tons of motherboard and PCI-E cards available already that has USB 3.0 support. Motherboard manufactures such as Asus and Gigabyte already have it incorporated in their boards. While there are other manufactures that have the add on card available. I've even seen them bundled with hard drive packages.

You should see them standard with your "out of box" computers pretty soon.

What's the point? I highly doubt you'll be able to reach the maximum speed of USB2.0 currently.

My 90mb/sec Extreme IV CF cards can go faster than what USB 2.0 will support. I get better performance from my Firewire 800 reader.

Sandisk rates the Extreme IV cards at 45 MB/s max. (http://www.sandisk.com/products/dslr (external link)).

Only their Extreme Pro cards will go up to 90 MB/s, but that's still just a theoretical limit (not sustained).

Actually, it's 480 Mb/s (Megabit/s) which translates to 60 MB/s (Megabyte/s).

That's Mb (megabits) per second in the USB spec. 45-90 MB (megabytes) per second, which the cards are rated at, correspond to 360-720 mb/sec.

Thanks for the explanation!

BTW, I bought a Gigabit motherboard with USB 3 last month, so this stuff is showing up everywhere.

And that's what I have. I left out the "Pro" when I posted my reply. I definitely see a speed difference between Firewire 800 and USB 2.0.
