I had to call, just to make sure it wasn't a typo or a bad joke.

After I was told that they didn't set the price/cost (huh?!), I told the CS that I would like to decline the repair. A brand new 50D body is $900-1000 at most, why would I pay $1871 to repair my 50D?

There was a long pause on the phone afterwards because I was waiting for the CS lady to explain why the repair cost would be so high or any other options.

Finally asked her about trade-up program and she said, oh yeah, we also do that, we'll sell you a refurb. 50D for $699 and we'll also keep your broken 50D.

I'm sitting on it now - clueless of what I need to do next

What's broken with your 50d? For $1871 just tell them you want a 7d with a kit lens :)

Exactly..

I did have the same experience with Sony.. twice.. Which is why I steer away from Sony goods. Once a VCR broke and they wanted almost double the cost of a new one for repairs. The second with a TV, same story.

What on earth is wrong with your 50D that would cost you 2X as much as a new one to repair?

Something doesn't sound right to fix a 50D for that much. You can get a new 7D for that cost

hmm what dd you do with that 50D? Let it fall from the Empire State?
and was that a Canon repairshop you had contact with?
I gotta say I would be laughing my ass off if they asked for that price. I'd just ask for the camera back and go and get a new body instead of paying 700 bucks for a refurb and let them keep your broken 50D.

I would call them back and say that you were switching to Nikon. They would not know either way if you weren't. They still register complaints dont they?

Please speak slowly and distinctly. I have a wife and a computer, I don't need any more confusion in my life.

You think that any manufacturer would cap repair costs at their cost of producing a unit + some nominal, say 10%~15%, processing fee.

You could keep it and use it for a flower pot or something.

What did you do? Drop it in the ocean? Sounds like you'd be getting everything replaced. Just remember the parts cost is higher than the assembled product cost, because a new camera comes off a production line. A repaired camera with replacement parts is hand-crafted.

Agreed.

Really, quoting you that price just makes them look idiotic - as if they don't even understand the price point of their own products.

That is nuts. You could buy a new one plus a 17-55 on eBay with Bing for less than that. I guess cameras have become like TVs and VCRs - they break you throw them in the garbage and buy a new one.
