Hello everyone! I've been watching this little guy show up in my backyard for the past few weeks, but I haven't been able to get a good shot of him until this evening. I've gone through my bird identification guide a few times with no luck and through my usual bird identification website, as well, but still haven't been able to get a hit on what kind of bird this is. If you have an idea, I'd love to hear it! By the way, I'm in Miami, Florida, just in case you need the geographical reference.

Thanks to all in advance!

which website do you use for your bird identification? I have yet to find one worthy of using.

Matt, I just looked up the female Painted Bunting and the colors and beak are the closest I've seen so far. Thank you for the identification and for the praise! I appreciate your help!!!

migidymike, I use www.whatbird.com (external link) for online references and National Geographic's Eastern United States Bird Guide book in the field. It's a great combination, in my opinion, but I guess after today's inability to successfully identify this particular bird, they're not foolproof solutions. It's always nice to have POTN as another source for information!

I agree female painted bunting or could be juvenile male. The male has the females colors until the second year when they migrate south and molt into their adult colors.
I am very familiar with these birds and do counts and observations for paintedbuntings.org the last 4 years. Here is SC. They started arriving in the early part of this month (April) for the breeding season.
Very nice shot may I add.

DCINSC, thank you for the detailed explanation! It's my first time ever seeing one, so it was a treat for me. By the way, thank you for the compliment, as well!
