Those cheap white Styrofoam coolers are great - I put ice in them and they don't melt completely in one day even if baking in the sun at the beach (at least for those I had). Might try it empty for cameras. If they can keep ice cold, they can keep heat away from cameras even if empty of anything cold. I will have to try this, I worry about my cameras in my car, it can get hot at times even in Maine.

I have one of these (external link) for when we're driving in the summer with everything that I'm not going to be needing ready access to. Holds a ton of gear:

There are also cables, filters, etc. in the outside pockets.

That's a Domke F1x sitting on top of it.

Still in that greenhouse of a passenger compartment. Even on a moderate day, it can hit 40-50 Celsius in there.

I'm here in Va, and it gets very hot in my minivan during the day even with the windows in the back slightly opened. It is impossible to leave anything electronic except for the GPS in the car. I keep Costco freezer bags in the car for shopping, but even those can't handle the heat on very hot days. The best advice is to carry your camera with you in a small bag, or holster. It's not awful, and how much gear do you carry around anyway? I only keep my 5D2 with 24-70 with me most of the time. That I can carry in a holster bag or my Domke F-5XB. Not much weight. If I go to a shoot and have to wait, I just take a few larger bags with a wheely thing. Jon advised this years ago and I still use it. Not too glamorous, but I don't care. I can't leave such valuable equipment in the 120+ temps in the car.

Forgot to mention. The large Costco-Sam's Club cold storage totes can fit my F-802 and any other large camera bag inside it and zipped. I keep one small ice pack if I know it's a shot wait, 2 or more packs in different sections of the bag if longer. I don't put more since it can be too cold and the gear will be affected. I just make sure the bag is well hidden and not in the direct sun in the car.

Wow, thanks to everyone who replied. I didn't expect to get so many responses so soon. I think I'll be trying some sort of cooler or insulated bag. I take it in with me every night, and its never in the car for more than 5 hours. And since I go to Blue Ridge Community college instead of JMU, the risk of theft is MUCH lower. ;)

If you dont know much about JMU, go to youtube and search "jmu springfest 2010 riot"

Was quite an event, very glad I wasn't around.

Again, thanks for all the helpful advice
