Can anyone recommend an affordable wide angle lens? By affordable, I mean something cheaper than the retail cost of the Canon 16-35mm f/2.8. Perhaps a tamron or sigma? any suggestions?

camera is 1D mark III. definitely need auto focus.

Canon's 17-40 if you are on full frame and need auto-focus. If you're on crop the Tokina 11-16 is a winner.

There are several options for manual focus lenses.

The Tokina 12-24 f/4 is around $330 used, I believe. Probably one of the most affordable WA lenses.

I don't think it'll work on 1.3x crop. You can stick to 17-40, but other than that there are not lots of affordable options. I started my thread to find out, turns out you CAN use tokina but only on the wider end. Also, there's a sigma 12-24 which retails for $860!

So I decided to stick to crop and save money :D . Expensive equipment requires expensive lens. No way around it.
