in Pekka's rules (found in the competition thread) for posting images the following statement is made:

If photo size exceeds 1024x1024 box, you may not embed it: post a link (URL) to it instead.

I am curious what "embed" means. Does this mean that the image is on your server (attached) or that the image was embedded into a post using a link to my server? I posted [IMG] a single image from my server that is 1440 wide and didn't get flagged nor did the forum software tank.

Another question. Can anyone start a new thread in the Competition section? Does it need to be cleared by mods before hand?

Thanks ... Joe

"embed" means to have the photo displayed in the post, however it is displayed (whether it is hosted externally or attached). The forum software will allow oversized photos to be displayed in threads, but these will be converted to links when a moderator sees them (or when they are reported to us).

And yes, anyone can start a new competition in the Competition thread. None of the threads are officially sanctioned by POTN staff, even though we may enjoy participating in them

Imbed/Embed means that the photo is displayed within the thread itself wihtout having to click on a link.

Currently the forum do NOT auto resize oversized photos. That is your responsibility to ensure it is max 1024 on either side.

Second question: New threads in competition don't need mod approval.

EDITING OF MY PHOTOS IS NOT ALLOWED

Is there any particular reason why? Is it a cosmetic function or a real cost and burden to the POTN forum?

The 1024px image size is there for convenience of viewing. It's a good enough size for people to see the quality of an image without having to scroll the screen to see the whole photo.

Yes, various browsers are capable of dynamic resizing, but this is not always visually pleasing (and not everyone has the feature turned on). Also, larger photos are often larger in kb terms, which results in slow loading where people's internet isn't the fastest.

And yes, Pekka bears the cost for the storage of people's attachments, which is a reason for the file size limits. Members generous donations only goes part way toward the funding. Pekka provides POTN at a personal cost to a large extent, something we are all hugely grateful for.

I made a donation to the cause and now use my own server as I want to alleviate Pekka's costs and obtain higher image quality. I have the same sense of gratitude but from a less traveled path than the many here.
