Are they very brittle or are they able to flex and absorb bumps? I plan on keeping them in filter wallets, but I'm curious how well they need to be protected inside a bag.

Resin filters are not very flexible and shatter rather than bend. Glass will be even worse.

But as long as the wallet is not crushed, then it should be OK. I keep my Cokins in the original plastic boxes they were supplied in and even in a very crowded backpack they have been fine. One shattered when I fell (pushed) on one occasion, but it also damaged my 24-70L so it was probably inevitable.

I think scratching is a bigger issue

How thick are the plastic cases they come in? I have a LowePro bag with sliplock connectors and I could get a pouch to hold the filters in their boxes.

I dropped a full set of Lee Filters still in the holder. They didn't break, just a few scratches.

Not sure about the Lee, but the Hitech come in a holder that would be totally worthless for storage or carrying. I have my Hitech in a Lee carry pouch/wallet. It is quite bulky, but works nicely.
