I bought 4 cameras used within the last 6 months. They are all out of production and very nice examples that show great care. I also bought a great little lens this way. Then Bing got into the act. No matter what I do to try and buy used (recently a 17-40L and 70-200L, 2 nifty fifty's and a B&W filter), I check what I can get used vs. a brand new lens on eBay from a solid retailer. The retailers who sell on eBay are already rock bottom. Add in the 8% and it's no contest. The new prices are now frankly right smack in the middle of used values (or what people are asking, anyway).

Used camera gear already has very high resale value compared to other consumer goods but there's now a chink in that armor. A used lens must net me 20% in my pocket to fore-go the insurance of an immediate return and/or full manufacturer's warranty and I had a hard time finding that before Bing. With Bing, it just won't happen for me no matter how hard I look.

So, my friends, I'm trying to be a good fur trader... it's in my blood and all... but until these Bing eBay deals go away, I'm gonna have to stick with the sh*tty new stuff! :p

Ah yes, but I won't buy used from eBay... way too hard to interface directly with the seller... too many crooks... much too risky for delicate goods... such a dilemma...

I won't buy used unless it's 20% less for what I can get it for new. With Adorama and Calumet on ebay, it's tough to find that. I really want to save money and buy used but not if I'm only going to save a few bucks on something several years old. There are still bargains to be found. I just suck at finding them.

I agree.

I wanted to buy my 70-200 and 85L used. I just couldn't justify spending the same or more for a used copy.

The brilliant part, though, is that my new (to me) lenses will probably net me almost 100% of my purchase price if/when I sell them! :D Bing and eBay have covered my depreciation!

both are cashback reward sites, just so happens you could get them to work in addition to bing 8%. i only recently learn of mrrebates.com from another POTN post but can confirm the double dipping works with bing. maximum cashback per ebay transaction is $30 and it takes a while for the reward to clear, 90 days i think.

There are still some good deals to be had on used equipment from sellers who don't price their items higher than the net cost after Bing. I see quite a few used 50D bodies offered in the range of $850-900 while several authorized dealers have them on eBay for $859-879 before the cash back. You just have to shop smart.

There still is cashback on eBay, they're just limiting it to certain search terms. Use this site:

Yep, I finally just pulled the trigger today on a New 17-40 with Full US Warranty from an Authorized Canon Dealer on eBay.

Buy It Now Price with Free Shipping $745.95
Less 10% for Bing and Ebay Bucks $ 74.60
Net Price To Me $671.35

I have seen plenty of eBay Auctions for a USED 17-40 end in the $625 -$675 Range and there have even been some For Sale posts listed Here and on FM for similar prices !!

Bing Rocks !!

(Also used it for my New MarkIII)

I saw one the other day, I think it was on FM, for $500. Just had a tiny scratch on the body, the glass was perfect. I couldn't find a deal like that when I bought mine, at the time they were $700 new and just about every one I saw used was $625 plus shipping and 3% for PayPal.
