Lens on Body in Bag?

I've noticed that many bags say thay can hold "body with lens attached". Last time, I was in my local camera store, I told the sales lady I never leave a lens attached in the bag when transporting or storing and she looked at me like I was insane. My thinking is never know what I'll need, why have to take one off to put one on. Why not start with nothing - saves a step.

Do you guys always have a lens mounted to your body/bodies? What would be your thinking?

If there's no lens attached, there's a 100% chance that you'll have to take time to attach one before taking a picture. But if there is one attached, there's a one-divided-by-the number-of-lenses-you-have chance that it will be the one you want when you shoot your next photo. Laziness rules!:)

Well, my thinking is that I'll have a lens attached and ready to shoot at a moment's notice, and I'll have other lenses in the bag that I may need. If I'm bringing a large telephoto lens, that's often the one I leave attached to the body in the bag.

I have 2 bodies and 3 lenses.. Do the math :)

Even when I had only 1 body, I would keep the widest lens on when in the bag.. I just makes sense that I can whip out the body for a quick shot without needing to fumbling with my entire kit eh?

Always. The design of my bag (backpack) lends itself to keeping a 70-200 mounted, although that can be easily reconfigured. I've had enough of those, "miss it in a moment", shots present themselves that I always keep a lens on, even if it isnt the ideal one.

When I use a roller, everything's kept separate because it means that I'll be more focused on the real job ahead, which would require a "sit down to set up" phase. When I go out for walkarounds with friends and all that, it's usually a single lens alone in a bag or with a strap.

I do not leave a lens mounted, takes up too much space in my roller bag.

I've kept them attached for 40+ years. This way they are always ready. But the key thing is that you want to make sure they are well protected in a good, nicely padded bag. Most bags for years have velcro partitions that enable you to "lock" the gear into place, so there is no flopping around or stress on components.

I have two bodies and five lenses in my ThinkTank Airport Security roller. Two are mounted and the other three are "padded" safely in place.

I always have 24-105 on 5DII. Sometimes I will take 100 f/2.8 or 50 f/1.8 along. It sounds like 33% chance to have right lens, but more like 99% chance because I know I will almost always use 24-105.

For day trips, I also have 30D which I have attached to 70-200, but will often switch to 150-500+1.4tc. My SS300 does not have space for 150-500 so I carry that in the "case" Sigma shipped with lens.

I'm not a pro so try to stick with the lens that is already on camera. It is quicker/easier for me to pop on flash then to switch lens for something faster.

What I have fits BEST in my bag with the 70-200 f/2.8 IS ATTACHED to the camera body. No issues whatsoever during transport. Plus, who wants that 6 lb lead pipe rolling around inside the bag beating up my 7D?!!!

I have always had a camera body attached to one lens or another in my camera bags. When I carried two Nikon F (film) bodies in my bag, one would be without a lens attached but the other would definitely have had one of my most-used lenses (usually a 50mm or 105mm lens) attached.

Depends on your needs I guess. When I take my 300 2.8 out and about I can have the camera attached in the bag by one made by Kinesis:

Well, alrighty. Guess I'll redo my thinking. Now to decide what to put on the camera. Time to reconfigure the bag too.

Should also mention the bag is a Vertex 200, so there's plenty of protection for everything in it (and that's everything I have camera related).

I always keep a lens on my camera. I configured mine so that I don't have to change anything to the dividers. So it's either the 28-70L with the hood or the 70-200 with the hood reversed. Works great.

I only change lenses when I must, hence my cameras are never "bare". If only to minimize the amount of dust that gets into the body while swapping lenses.
