I am looking for a solution to extend the outdoor range of my off-camera 580ex2 (ST-E2 transmitter) using an IR reflector http://www.mennon-usa.com …_uni_info&products_id=285 (external link) Has anyone used this reflector before? How can it be attached to the flash unit? Thanks

I may not be entirely right but it seems like a regular piece of metal... It's basically acting like a gimp mirror.

That IR reflector is supposed to be used on the camera body to reflect IR light so that your IR remote control can supposedly be used from any direction you want. It's not going to do your flash any good because, assuming it does work, it's really not necessary on your flash. You can just point the front of the flash towards the master flash or ST-E2 to get a direct line-of-sight.

The problem I have is when I have a remote softbox on the right or left of the camera, the softbox mount does not allow the speedlight ir sensor to be rotated to the left or right without having the flash tube pointing at an awkward angle into the softbox. I have to keep the ir sensor rotated to the front or rear wrt the softbox, hence the need for some kind of reflector to direct the ir signals properly. I was planning to experiment with a reflector made of regular aluminum foil.

That's what I was going to suggest. :)

The aluminum foil trick worked like a charm. A small rectangular piece (facing the camera) was placed beside the ir sensor (facing away from camera). The "envelope" of the ST-E2 has been widened sufficiently for me to hold off getting a pw or rp.
