Can one adjust the time the backlight display stays on? It's not in the manual

I don't think so, I believe it is a operator controlled feature. You turn it on and turn it off. I have not noticed my backlight turning off without my involvement.

It may not be difficult in your perspective... but Canon has to pay people to make a solid flash firmware. It costs money. The more money spent in R&D, the more the flash is going to cost.

How critical is the timing of the backlight function anyway?

TJ

you think the 580 is expensive - try lookingat the price on the macro twinflash :(

Honestly though the firmwire code for custom timer functions for the backlight/display would be very simple to code up and test so I doubt that it would really add much to the units cost - also remmeber that each unit is going to be produced along with everything else canon make so it doubt that its a straight - more developement time = more cost - assocition.

Tools of the trade: Canon 400D, Canon 7D, Canon 70-200mm f2.8 IS L M2, Sigma 120-300mm f2.8 OS, Canon MPE 65mm f2.8 macro, Sigma 150mm f2.8 macro, Tamron 24-70mm f2.4, Sigma 70mm f2.8 macro, Sigma 8-16mm f4.5-5.6, Raynox DCR 250, loads of teleconverters and a flashy thingy too
