Tonights opponent is the legendary Canon 85mm f/1.2 L prime. Now be aware that my 85L is a mark I so it is not the latest version. To my knowledge it is a fine example and has been micro AFed to my body.

Iam using the same test targets as I used on my prior shots with the 135L. The first target is the same pillow shot at 1.3m iso 100 with each lens. The second target is the tapestry shot at ~3m iso 400 (since its darker fabric). Iam just showing the crops (to save space)tonight since you already saw what the whole frame looked like in the prior thread.

Target Crops - Pillow iso 100
First 70-200 II
Then 85L

I did not see part 1, but I'm going to take a look.

To my untrained eye, there's very little difference here.

So, do I get the version II of the 70-200? I think so.

Thanks for doing this, sir.

This is crazy! If this lens is that good I can't imagine when Canon gives a new makeover to the 24-70F2.8L and give it 'IS' plus this crazy sharpness... but then it may be unfair to Nikon and their lens lineup. I'm the only Canon user among my friends so I get abused by how good Nikon glass are and their AF is so much better than Canon... blah blah blah! Now, I can give them a run for their money...

At what aperture are you comparing? f/2.8 like the 135 test?

I think I saw more detail on the 135/2 than this, but I'm not seeing it here with the 85. Very impressive.

Its like redefining zooms. If they make the "next" 24-70 like this......

Do you mean comparisons of the prime at f/1.2 vs. the zoom at f/2.8 or are you kidding?

Nothing new really.
The 70-200 f4 IS is sharp like this wide open.
Clearly, Canon used the same/similar formula in this new lens to achieve the same type of sharpness.

I for one use my 85 around town. I would not walk around with my 70-200 if I didn't have to.

85 1.2 is great because its not as crazy big
