Anyone try using the new 70-200f/2.8 IS II with an extender and like the image quality. If you can please post some pics. I looked through the lens archive and didn't see any.

Read on Luminous Landscapes in the "product reviews" section. Seems there is some info there. I know for sure the 2x TC will degrade IQ, the 1.4X from what I have read most are happy with on lenses like you suggest using. I would not consider the 2x TC however.

Somewhere on here there is a thread entitled something like "Why I haven't bought a 400mm yet"
that shows some very good images using a 2x TC

Here you go! These are test snaps from around the house at iso 800 with the Canon 1.4X II TC. They are handheld without flash at 280mm wide open (f/4). I have included crops 100%. First at 1/125s.

First full images for reference without the extender on the 7D the focal length is 200 mm and with the extender about 140*1.4 mm so that the size remains roughly the same. The 70-200/II is equally sharp throughout the range so the difference in nominal focal lengths should be of no consequence. Without the extender it's f/2.8 and with the extender f/4.0

First the whole images resized, just so you get the idea. First without then with extender.

Now for the 7D 100% crops, first without then with extender:

In short, 1.6 crop + 1.4TC ruins the IQ beyond what I find acceptable. Not to mention that the otherwise magnificent AF lags seriously when the TC is used. So I rarely use it.

Finally, the 5DII, 200mm, without extender, 100% crop:

There is a possibility that you have a out of whack TC. I know I used to have those. Sent it to Canon and the difference was like night and day.

The 1.4x TC should not degrade the IQ by that much or slow down the AF to a point where it's unusable.

That doesn't look right

I've got this lens and a Canon 2 x convertor - very impressed with images so far. Heres an example @ 400mm, f 5.6 (wide open) ISO125, 1/320, IS on, 5D MkII

It's certainly a possibility but I wouldn't bet on it. I've seen samples from other users with 7Ds and 1DMkIVs and the results are similar. As for AF - it doesn't become unusable - it just degrades heavily. Basically 7D + 70-200/II + TC AF is the equal of 5DII + 70-200/II AF. It's not impossible to use, just annoyingly slow when you are used to a very fast and responsive AF.

I suppose you have to adjust microfocus to use TC 1.4X ... It looks like your samples with TC1.4X are out of focus, that's all !!!...

I never use any zooms, so I am not completly sure, but with my 135L2.0 and 300L2.8 .. I get sharpest pictures with TC's (1.4X and 2X) than crops !!!! more over, I do it with a 5D MKII which have plenty of really usable pixels !! (not like 50D or 7D)...

So I am not sure your conclusion are right...

Ah, but that's a 5DII. Different story altogether. For reference a very similar goose to yours but without TC:
