H.264 = future license fees to which Google is not a party of. Expect a battle ahead with VP8. H.264 is encumbered with lots of patents. It's not so free after all, and the reason its not such a slam dunk in the market.

I assure you, if VP8 (which is far from usable) enters the scene, there will be court challenges to it because it likely infringes upon patents.

H.264 is going to win this battle.

dump broad software patents, they're just a silly way of ensuring large Companies control the software industry and the US is doing their best to push them worldwide through our luddite governments. ;-)a

Steve has a point though. I would like flash, but at the same time I'll honestly say it's never really been an issue. The issue for me on Sunday was not being able to load Bodog Live Betting which uses flash during the NBA finals game. Oh I'm an Android guy too.

But seriously? The iPhone has terrific games. People want flash games but the honest truth is iPhone games are a whole new level. Many of them rival if not beat PSP/Nintendo DS games. I think a lot of developers put some insane graphics and gameplay into the games. Android on the other hand has nothing. I had like 4-5 pages of games on my iPod Touch, but I have 3 on my Android phone. They don't even compare. I only have games on my phone right now so I at least have SOME entertainment even though it feels like playing 10 year old games on a modern PC.

And with many enthusiasts running Firefox + NoScript and blocking flash here and there, I see the only real uses are Youtube, Hulu, etc.

And honestly Flash is just outdated technology. If you look at MS's Silverlight, before you go M$ bashing, realize that it uses existing .NET framework making it very easy on developers. Flash is outdated and lacks in the performance department. There isn't one thing that Flash does that's better than Silverlight. MS released some good technology out there. Unfortunately, HTML5 and Flash are easily adopted and the market is already rather saturated/mature. For Silverlight to take off, sites would require a lot of changes to start incorporating Silverlight based content. It's good stuff but I doubt it'll really spread that much.

Yeah. Even some simple stuff like Flight Control is addictive. I think it's just the API Apple has in place makes layouts and stuff incredibly easy. You can't make software look BAD. On Android, the XML and stuff requires devs to try harder to improve layouts and put something together nicely. Otherwise all the input boxes just make the thing look like DOS 6.3.

That and it must be all the developers flocked to Apple early on leaving crap behind for Android. With "ports" of games to Android, half of them suck, look bad, or perform terribly even though the new Android phones are way faster than the iPhone 2G/3G/3GS.

If it had at least 4" display I would buy it, but they decided to keep the 3.5" so I´ll buy the 4.3" HTC Touch HD2, even with slightly lower resolution (800×480).

Looks like the porn industry is set to drop Flash in favor of HTML 5. Goodbye Flash!

They may switch to video embedded in html5 rather than using flash for video, but that won't affect interactive flash for uses other than video.. i.e. the ever increasing popularity of flash games on sites like facebook which html5 will not help..

I do like the question of either or for Apple software or flash. So you can use flash for online apps that is open enough that anyone can support it in their browsers and anyone can release apps without adobe/apple's approval. OR you can write it for iphone/ipad and if apple approve your software it can be available exclusively on Apple's ecosystem, yeah thats much more open and accessible... LOL..

HTML5 and flash don't directly compete really, they are two different things and their is overlap for video delivery, but flash support means more than just support for their video delivery.

The iTunes App Store is there to protect people from unscrupulous activities, which are plaguing the Android platform as we speak. Already a botnet has been produced and about 20% of the apps harvest your personal data in an uncontrolled way. Anyone who uses Android phones is at serious risk of being compromised and defrauded. The iOS is nearly bulletproof in comparison.

As more content providers switch to HTML5 and (presumably) h.264, Flash will become less and less meaningful.
