I learned probably everything I'll ever want to know about the Apple "experience" the other night as I tried to help my friend recover his music library from his iPod. After a few hours of wrangling with inconsistent instructions online and dodging dozens of shareware programs specifically made for this purpose (!), we finally got his music back on his computer through some arcane series of mantras at the Holy iTunes Temple. I had no idea the iPod was designed as a one-way transaction, and it makes no sense. Zero. Don't even try to justify it. I don't know how people tolerate this with music and devices they've paid good money for.
At the end of this fiasco all I could think was... I could have hooked up one of my "inferior" iriver/SanDisk/Rockbox'd players as a vanilla MSC device and copied over my music seven hundred times by now using basic file operations.
"Open," my ass.
