Hello!

I'm doing a sister and sister mother's day shoot this evening and need help/suggestions on capturing light in the eye.

I'm fairly new to the photography world but have brave enough models to help me learn. I will be using a shoe mount flash :)

Any suggestions/tips are appreciate:rolleyes:d!

Whatever you decide to do I would suggest practicing beforehand, even if it is just on yourself. Here are a few ways I've done it...

Bounced flash into a wall/ceiling corner nearby...

This one is more subtle. It was a bright day but she was in the shade.

I think what LizzieJ mentioned would help you tremendously. Use any available light sources as catchlights like windows or skylights. Make sure to bounce the flash off walls and ceilings to avoid harsh shadows and the directional shoe mount point of view catchlight.

Though if you can, try to get the pieces so you can get your flash off camera. Here is where your options can really open up and where only your imagination can limit you.

What flash do you have? If it is the 580, there is a white card built into the top of the flash to provide a "catch light" on the eyes. Bounce the light off the ceiling, and have the card extended up. It works.

And, if you have a 430, you can simulate the same thing with an index card and a rubber band.
