Hi everyone,

I have just purchased a used 70-200mm 4L IS. I have a few questions to those of you who have a lot of experience with this lens.

1. With the 4 stop IS, what's the slowest shutter speed you can usually shoot with the lens handheld @f/4 and 200mm indoor without leaning against the wall, using tripod or anything to help stable your body/arms ? I don't intend to use this lens indoor tho. Just want to get an idea of how slow it can go in general.

2. Sharpness of the lens. Have anyone compare this lens and 17-55 @F/4 in term of sharpness?

3. Is this lens weather sealed?

4. Do your copy has dust? Mine has a few very tiny dusts but don't affect the picture at all.

Thanks for your help.

1. On a cropper, 1/20.

2. Probably similar. The f4 IS is a VERY sharp lens.

3. Yes

4. If it doesn't affect the image, then this is a non-issue. It's a fact of life with lenses.

My favorite lens. Incredibly sharp and versatile.

It depends on how good a hand holder you are. If you're good, I would say that 1/20 is possible.

As for dust, it tends to get inside the front element rather than the back. I would consider a UV filter on the front (I know this opens a can of worms). It would definitely cut down on dust getting to the edges of the front element and it provides impact protection (in my case it prevented an expensive repair in a drop situation).

I have had mine for 2 years now. I love it. I have been told I have extremely steady hands as I can shoot with this lens @ 1/4 sec with good results! @ 1/10 sec its always sharp! ;)

This is sharper than a lot of other lenses @ f4. Never tested it against the 17-55 though!

The weather sealing is completed when a decent filter is put on the front!

and finally if yours is new and had dust inside it get it replaced! if it is pre-owned and has dust but it doesn't affect your images then its obviously not causing any problems :)

This lens is a keeper for most who own one! I still have mine despite owning a f2.8 IS as well!
