Flash for Exposure or Interest?

Clearly flash can be used to get the exposure you need for those indoor or night time photos, however flash can also be used to light the subject in a way to make it interesting, by creating light contrast elements.

The more I use my speedlite, the more I think flash usage is more about lighting to create interesting light and shadows, than what I thought previously, that it was primarily to get light into a darkly lit scene.

Thoughts?

Congratulations...that 'revelation' is the first step to doing more than using flash as merely 'illumination when I cannot otherwise take the shot'
