I got a used CXPRO3 two nights ago and I have not been able to figure out what this thing is. I scoured the interwebs and the Manfrotto website but could not find any clue. The mystery is keeping me up tonight!

Did you just buy photography gear without knowing what it is or what it's used for?

You did, didn't you!?

OK people, who's turn is it to host the intervention?

Hahah. No I bought an entire CXPRO3 tripod! This is just one little part that was in the box. I can't find any place it attaches to the tripod or any use for it.

Does it screw into the underside of the tripod's centerpiece to allow you to hang weights from?

Certainly the tying of weights slung under a tripod to help stabilize it in eg windy conditions used to be quite a common practise eg amongst wildlife photographers. You tended to use whatever was locally available.

The other possibility is to hang the tripod tidily on a hook when you aren’t using it?

Simon is right...it's used to be able to hang the tripod...I've seen it used in stores that way.

nailed it.

I don't think so. Those accessories usually have a socket to screw onto the tripod's head mounting screw, not the screw proper. It might be so you can remove the center column and use the tripod without one, by screwing the head or head mounting plate onto that piece.

Hmm... that sounds like it might work. I will try to do that later today and let you know if it works.

It's interesting I went through every single page in the Manfrotto catalog and every page on the accessories section of the website and could not find this thing.

I suppose I could ask the guy I got it from.....

Yeah - I checked their site and catalog too . . .

The mounting plate (for the tripod head) may come off the center column and attach to that piece if it doesn't reach far enough to connect directly to the head.
