I am new to the DSLR world, just picked up an XSI a week ago. I do have 1 question, though.
Does anyone use the A-DEP mode for landscape or group shots to get the sharpest/greatest depth of field, or do you just stop down to F8 or F11 or greater.

Thanks

I've tried A-DEP a time or two but much prefer controlling DOF myself. It would come close to the setting I would have chosen but sometimes not.

I have owned a DSLR for 6 years now and I have never used A-DEP.

I've never used a-dep. I wouldnt consider using it for landscapes simply because the element of such a photo could be too widely spread for it to be effective. Perhaps it would be useful for group shots but I stlll prefer to do it myself as thats how I learned before such things were invented.

Thank you for all of your responses. It looked good in the documentation from Canon, but since I have not read 1 thing about it in forums I figured nobody uses it.

It's a really good feature for folks that don't really understand the factors that control DOF, but know that they want a lot of it, or enough of it to get all the subjects in focus. It works well for group portraits, less well for landscapes.

I used A_DEP one. It was an accident, the dial turned and I didn't realize it. That was a big WTH moment.

My 5D doesn't have it, but my XSi did. I tried it a couple times. Once, it was a forest scene, with trees near and far. It stopped the lens down to f/32. That's the last time I used A-DEP.
