I've got a nice aluminum tripod that I am currently using as a everyday. I've got travel coming up this summer and was kicking around the idea of picking up a CF pod. However, I don't really have $3-600 to drop.

So I was thumbing through the Cabela's catalog the other night and came across their tripods. Here's the link:

They support 13lbs. which more 2 more than my current biggest setup. I wanted to read more about the specs, but the guy at Cabelas couldn't, due to policy, tell me who makes them.

Any of you have a guess? I was thinking Vanguard, since Cabelas carries the Alta series.

that tripod is identical to a dolica proline. http://www.amazon.com …ics&qid=1272638187&sr=8-1 (external link)

the leg locks are benro style if i remember correctly. the legs are a little thinner. the head is a standard ball head but the plate isn't quite as nice as a manfrotto. it does lock without camera droop with a light lens. i recommended my better half order the dolica for use with her P&S and did. she just got it and with the one trip out, she seems quite happy with it. it does have a hook to weigh it down, and i would use it given the lighter weight of the tripod and legs. if you aren't throwing some serious glass on your camera and need a stop gap till you can go "high roller" on a tripod, i'd say it should suffice for you just fine.

I'm pretty sure I can take the ball head off my current tripod and put it on there for some extra "comfort". Biggest setup I have right now is 50d with grip, 150-500, which comes to just under 7 lbs per my calculations using stated weights on B&H. Based on a weight rating of 13.5 lbs, I would be OK there.

BTW, I'm considering this one since I can get it for free thanks to points. Sad there's nothing else at Cabelas I would like to have.

If it's free, I can't think of a reason not to grab it. Can't beat that!!

Hmm.... what about buying something that you can sell or craigslist or ebay or SOMETHING and get the money and put it towards a more well known and reliable tripod setup?
