This would NOT be a very big device, and would not be a fast charger under the USB power specification. It COULD be build right into the camera, therefore you would still have "just a USB cable."

Besides my charger for my 1D series batteries I don't think the chargers are a large device either. You are right in that it is possible, I still think it would be horrible impractical.

I don't have a charger near by me at the moment, but how much power are they rated to put out exactly? I know USB is roughly 2.5W of output power.

Why yes, I am a jerk. Thank you for asking.

Thinking it over again....Rather than a cord... How about a rechargeing adaper for the "Power Mat" the wireless conductive mat that charges phones, ipods, etc...etc.. Just set it down and let it charge. No wire to hook or unhook. I like that better than a cord. Let it do all the converting that needs to be done.

"Power Mat" the wireless conductive mat

Stuff like this are incredibly stupid ideas. Just because we "have" a lot of so called "wireless" gear does not mean that still others can or should be.

What we REALLY need are some hard-and-fast standards for "wall wort" powersupplies AND CONNECTORS so that there are a certain amount of standards, just like for USB.

(Ever dug through the endless pile of chargers/ supplies/ wall worts/ plugs/ cables/ etc at the thrift stores? Ridiculous)

Actually, this is exactly where we are headed. There won't be power adapters for all the different devices, you will have "stations" around your house where you just place your devices, and they charge. A standardization for ac/dc converters, I believe, is starting to take place, but it is just a temporary step to the next generation of charging technology.

That's a crazy idea! Then how would companies charge $45 "high grade" proprietary cables?

Doesn't mean they should not be either. Wireless is the future of many things. Get on board or get left behind. If it was such a stupid idea, why are they making millions of dollars off of them? (beigh over priced does not count, that part is obvious)

Absofreakenlutley!! I totaly despise that companies think every device needs a different connector. If things get standardized, they could stop shipping the supplys (and still charge full price) because people will already have 4 -5 supplies that will work for everything.

As the original poster, I would fully support a "power mat" instead of my original request. I had thought about that in the past for other items, but for a camera/battery I think it would be excellent, too.

Great suggestion.
