Photoshop for iPhone and iPod Touch already exists as freebie. My guess is that it could easily be ported to the iPad and since the screen is bigger, Adobe could even add some functionalities.

Besides, doesn't the iPad run on the same OS as the iPhone? I admit I'm not following these things as much as I used to so I might be wrong.

that app is essentially useless. as with most apps, its just a toy really.

AHAHAHAHA

I should have known. If Adobe makes it free... it means a lot. :D

I agree.... and I'll go the next step to say iPad = Toy. ; Laptop = functional tool.

i wasn't trying to downplay the ipad as it is a great device, just as the iphone/ipod touch are also great devices. I will say that the allure of the appstore wore off on me rather quickly and yes i do feel that most apps are basically toys. to hell with it, the appstore is totally lame. watered down wishy washy sorry excuse for applications in an attempt to make something more than it actually is. :D

Well some serious app makers out there are thinking about making iPad versions.

Just been at Flying Meat's Acorn web site (Acorn is one of the good image editing apps for OS X out there) and for now the dev is concentrating on making an iPad version of VoodooPad but he might tackle Acorn next. He still has to do consider his options and stick to his priorities for now but he does sound tempted.

I personally think it's a question of time, really. The people that I know that have played with one can't believe it won't be highly useful to photographers some time soon.

I was trying to think of a reason to buy an ipad, and while I think I have streamlined my rationization process, I couldn't come up with a good reason. I have a desktop iMac and a MacBook pro that I can carry around and edit photos, so justifying the iPad was tough. Then I decided that because I turn 52 in July, that was reason enough to buy a new toy, so I'm picking one up tomorrow. Not everybody "gets" to be 52.
I probably don't need a camera connector kid as I won't be editing on it anyway, but I could get my photos into it by creating a mobile me gallery. AFter I edit my photos, I always upload them to my mobile me gallery anyway, so I can view them on my iPhone. If I have the mobile me gallery app on my iPad, I can view them and show them that way without needing a camera connector kid. Yes?

Sue...

I suggest you look at Picasa Web. I am not necessarily a fan of Picasa, but the Picasa Web is great, particularly for viewing images on iPad/iPhone.

On the iPxxx, you may want to look at apps called 'Web Albums' or 'iPicasso', which I like the UIs better than the Picasa mobile interface.

I recently found out that the Roku Digital Player http://www.roku.com/ (external link) in addition to showing Netflix directly has a 3rd party (Sunimi) app to view Picassa Web albums on your TV (plus YouTube and Vimeo coming).

As others have said, I am not sure the iPad is the right tool for travel backup of images....but the more I use the iPhone and iPad (really my wife's) the more uses I have for them...paradigm changing tools...!!!

FYI: I know the IPAD craze has taken over but there are other solutions that are more functional (right now) and a lot less expensive. I picked up a nice little 'notebook' earlier this week. Its the ACER Aspire 1410; Celeron processor, 2gb RAM, 250gb HD, full Windows 7 Premium Home (64 bit) w/ a load of connectivity (3 USB, an SD+ slot, B/T, HDMI, etc. No CF slot. It has a full keyboard and a very nice 11.6" screen. No DVD/CD device on board; you'll need to get a USB DVD/CD R/W drive for <$50. The ACER was $380 plus tax. Handles all my S/W applications (ie. Office, PS, LR, DPP, etc) plus makes a nice temp storage for images while on the road.

As you've probably guessed I'm not a big Apple devotee; would like to be but the start up cost of their products (compared to PC based stuff) has always gotten in my way. I do of course have an IPOD; who doesn't?

Yup, I'll agree that 99% of the stuff in the appstore is crud (then again, Theodore Sturgeon says that "99% of everything is crud" and I'd probably agree). But if you wade through the crud there are some real gems out there.

There's an app by a company called Birdguides that has photos, videos, sound files, distribution maps and text files for 271 different UK and European birds. It's fantastic - it's totally non-non-non-crud. And it's brilliant on the iPhone, where you can easily carry it in the field, but would be crud on the iPad. Contrariwise, there are good iPhone apps that are limited by the small screen size that would be great on the iPad (my friend is now totally hooked on reading comic books on his). And I'm really looking forward to the kindle-like functionality.

I have had my eye on that same unit. Hows it handle the Adobe apps (Photoshop, Lightroom, Illustrator, etc)?

I might have jumped the gun a bit. So far I've installed Office 2007 Professional (just Word & Outlook) PhotoShop Elements 8, all the Canon camera apps plus a bunch of other stuff (ie. Porsche Durametric S/W tools for garage work). With just 250gb of HD I'm being conservative regarding loading. I plan on installing Lightroom but haven't gotten around to it yet.

My observation, so far, is that this little notebook performs just fine. I was pleasantly surprised how relatively quick it is and the fact that the on-board wireless performs quite well (good connections and no drop outs).

I'll provide more info once I get more hands-on and install LR.

Is there an SSH app on the ipads? if so, just FTP into them, and drop your picture files into the right spot..

should work theoretically...

i think the ipad has it's place. as a portfolio presentation device it's much more compelling to me then looking at a laptop. being able to hand it to a client and letting them flip through the album is just more effective to me. i generally agree it's not that great for general purpose but there are very specific purposes where i think it does a better job then a laptop.

however it does not replace a laptop or pc, you need the ipad in addition to those.

I really do hope that Adobe bury the hatchet with Apple and release a Lightroom Catalog Browser. This would take your LR catalog on Mac or PC and export a version with preview images resized to something that the iPad screen is more suited to. One could then browse the catalog, using Lightroom Keyword and Metadata filters. Essentially it would just be the LR Library module.

I don't think the hatchet is going to be buried anytime soon. Did you see what Steve Jobs wrote about their Flash player just last week? Basically he told Adobe to go pound sand... none of Apple's portable products are going to use Flash. Jobs clearly has disagreements with Adobe.

No, 33 years working for the same company and a final salary pension. When they asked for volunteers to go last year I was first in the queue - full pension plus 2 year's salary for redundancy was an offer I couldn't refuse.
