Does the iPad have a hard protective cover? If not, how will you transport it?

If anything was a solution in search of a problem this is.

Apple offers a case for it:

But I can guarantee you third parties will be making cases for it too.

So unless you buy something extra the screen has no protection? Crazy!

I don't think the hatchet is going to be buried anytime soon. Did you see what Steve Jobs wrote about their Flash player just last week? Basically he told Adobe to go pound sand... none of Apple's portable products are going to use Flash. Jobs clearly has disagreements with Adobe.

http://www.apple.com/hotnews/thoughts-on-flash/ (external link)

Hey Frank... You're 52 and already retired? Govt. pension I assume?

The only place hatchets are going to be buried on that one is the head of the other.

That said, I have to say Jobs' response was pretty well thought out. Adobe has not done a good job in making the Flash player safe nor efficient. There are issues in the PC/Mac side of things, but those issues (battery, security and efficiency) are completely unacceptable in the cell phone world.

If you take a decent laptop you can edit image on it too.

I use my SZ for editing - 13,3", 1,79kg - I can edit images, copy them from a camera...
And if I want to show the images to people too.

It imports/converts RAW from my nikon just fine. You won't be able to do much real serious editing with what is currently available in the app store, but as a large photo storage/review device it seems pretty good so far...

Imports RAW and JPG from my Canon T2i very well too. Funny since not even Photoshop can read my RAW files (profile hasn't been updated yet). Windows can't view them, no Adobe programs can view them, only a few Mac apps can view them. Really sucks...yet the iPad reads them fine.

Oh, and it *does* downconvert them to probably around double the resolution of the iPad (around 2100x1500 or so). It's good for viewing the pictures, but not for *very* fine details.

Oh and plugging in the camera via USB works just as well. You can also plug in any kind of card adapter that doesn't require an outside power source via USB, so you can use CF cards with the iPad.

Probably the reason it can read them is because it's not really looking at the raw data at all, but displaying the embedded jpeg; which is why they're smaller.

exactly my thought too. I'm sure the iPad does not have RAW converters installed for every camera.

Just in installed LR 2.7. Works just fine. Since the screen is just 11.6" image editing and viewing isn't optimum but it'll do. Remember the screen resolution is 1366X768.

I have had my eye on that same unit. Hows it handle the Adobe apps (Photoshop, Lightroom, Illustrator, etc)?

I used one the other day for a few hours and I’ve been a Mac-head longer than Stephen Fry and all his little goblins. Not impressed. I don’t want one.

Not only that but my chum who brought her iPad round the other day is already making several.

I've used it some in daylight. While better than my laptop screen (17 inch MacBook Pro, Unibody), it nothing to write home about in direct sunlight. I'm not saying its bad; its just a limitation inherent in the current technology. However, in the looks department, even mediocre images come to like. For a picture viewer, it creates an awesome dynamic in small groups. For example, recently did a few pictures of a small group of friends and downloaded them to the iPad. Being able to pass around the images, like a picture frame, with the butter smooth IPS screen was awesome. Sure, the color space was off (it was RAW), it was not white balanced correctly and others flaws that many here would notice; but it did not matter, the dynamic it created was simply awe inspiring.

I'm not an Apple fanboy, but they really knocked it out of the park with this one. I'd be disappointed if I bought it to replace a notebook, but I did not. It complements my MacBook Pro; not replaces it

For my use really to add to this discussion I just switched over to fully using Aperture 3 and all the added benefits of how quick it is to import photos directly into a Mac.

Now I have 2 computers myself (2.8 Ghz 8-core Mac Pro and 17" 2.66 MBP non i7 version). Neither of these computers are slouches for speed. But with the recent upgrade in Aperture 3 to 3.0.3 and finding out that I can export photos (Including RAW) from my iPad into whatever computer I want and creating specific "Projects" I am seeing less and less of a real need to bring that 17" MBP with me to an event.

The iPad is very compact and with the camera kit I can even use a powered USB card reader to read any type of media for importing photos directly to the iPad.

Most of my photo editing is going to be done on my speed demon Mac Pro. I originally got the 17" MBP because I wanted something in the field to really show off to other photographers and clients my stuff on the fly.

But now the Ipad really is replacing that need because It's screen is so very nice in showing off photos and as a nice storage (in-between) device to get my info eventually to the Pro.

I just got my ipad and I can read it outside in bright light just fine. It has a setting where you can adjust the screen brightness, or it will adjust it automatically to the ambient light. the image resolution is GREAT. I don't need to use it to process my raw files and images, I just wanted it for a book reader and to be able to bring it with me when I visit my relatives in Nova Scotia, as I don't bring my laptop, and they can see my family photos on a screen bigger than my iphone. I only bought the 16gb model, but I on my 16gb iphone, I have more than 5000 large already photoshopped images (large jpgs from a 1ds) and my iphone has used less than 1/2 its available space. For those who say the ipad is only a large ipod touch, I say "EXACTLY, and I LOVE it!!!" However, if you really need to be able to process and edit your pics on it, you might be better off with a netbook.
